Chapter 3 - THE CRIMSON LINE

By the second week, the bruising along Aaliyah’s ribcage had faded to a mottled yellow-green, but the atmosphere within the Petrov Citadel had only darkened.

The mansion was no longer merely an estate; it was an armed compound. Sentries walked the perimeter with Belgian Malinois attack dogs; security drones buzzed through the pine-covered hills of the estate; and the windows were covered with steel blast shutters that descended at sundown.

Yet, within the fortified walls, an extraordinary transformation was taking place.

"No," a small voice piped up from the kitchen island. "More sugar."

Aaliyah paused, her wooden spoon hovering over a bowl of pancake batter. She slowly turned around.

Leo was sitting on the marble counter, his legs swinging back and forth. His large brown eyes—so much like the portraits of the late Elena Petrov that hung in the east wing—were fixed intently on the bowl.

It was the first complete sentence he had uttered in twenty-four months.

Across the room, standing by the industrial espresso machine, Caruso dropped his ceramic mug. The porcelain shattered against the slate floor, dark roast splashing across his polished combat boots. The scarred lieutenant stared at the boy as if he had just witnessed Lazarus rising from the dead.

"Sugar," Leo repeated, pointing a small, determined finger at the pantry. "She said two spoons. It needs three."

Aaliyah choked back a laugh, though her eyes stung with sudden, hot tears. She looked at Caruso, who was already reaching for his radio, his hands visibly shaking.

"Don't you dare," Aaliyah warned the giant hitman with a soft smile. "Let him have his breakfast first."

Caruso slowly pulled his hand away from his collar mic, nodding dumbly before retreating from the kitchen with backward glances, looking terrified and awestruck in equal measure.

Ten minutes later, the double doors of the kitchen swung open.

Roman entered. He was dressed in his customary dark suit, but there was an uncharacteristic haste in his stride. He stopped dead in the center of the kitchen, taking in the scene.

Leo was covered in powdered sugar, methodically drowning a stack of unevenly shaped pancakes in maple syrup. Aaliyah was wiping flour from her hands with a linen towel, her hair tied up in a messy knot, wearing an oversized cashmere sweater Roman had instructed his staff to leave in her wardrobe.

Roman’s eyes locked onto his son.

"Leo," Roman said, his voice unusually low.

The boy looked up. For months, Leo’s gaze toward his father had been either blank or defiant. But now, with Aaliyah standing just behind his right shoulder, her hand resting lightly on the boy's back, Leo picked up a slice of strawberry.

"She burned the first one," Leo said casually, popping the fruit into his mouth.

Aaliyah gasped in mock horror. "Traitor. I told you that was an experimental batch."

Roman did not speak. He walked across the kitchen floor with deliberate slowness, stopping right beside the island. He looked down at his son, then raised his gaze to Aaliyah.

The look in his eyes was almost frightening in its intensity. It was the look of a starving man being presented with a banquet—a mixture of agonizing relief, reverence, and an overwhelming, dangerous possessiveness.

He placed a massive hand on top of Leo’s head, his fingers gently tangling in the boy’s curls. "Was it truly burned?" Roman asked softly.

"Crispy," Leo corrected, nodding seriously.

Roman let out a breath—a sharp, rough sound that sounded suspiciously like a laugh smothered by years of discipline. He looked at Aaliyah, his winter-gray eyes glittering with a warmth she hadn't known existed within him.

"You perform miracles, Miss Campbell."

"It's just pancakes, Mr. Petrov."

"Nothing about you is 'just' anything," Roman said, stepping closer.

The air between them instantly shifted, thick with an electric charge that made the hairs on Aaliyah’s arms stand up. The domestic illusion of the kitchen seemed to warp under the sheer weight of his proximity.

"Tonight is the Equinox Gala at the Grand Belvedere," Roman said, his eyes dropping briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes. "The heads of the five syndicates will be present. Including Mikhail Tarasov."

Aaliyah’s smile faded. "You're going?"

"We are going," Roman corrected. "I need Tarasov to see that my house is unshaken. And I need the council to understand that the boy is safe, whole, and untouchable."

"You want to bring Leo into the open?" she asked, her protective instincts immediately flaring. "After what happened in the garage?"

"No," Roman said, his voice dropping into that dark, lethal register that made her pulse flutter. "Leo will remain here under the protection of fifty men and my personal armorers. You, however, will be at my side."

Aaliyah blinked. "Me? I'm the nanny, Roman."

"You are the woman who took shrapnel for my bloodline," Roman said, his hand sliding from Leo’s head to rest on the edge of the counter, trapping her against the island. "You are the woman who brought my son back from the dead. Tonight, they will see that anyone who touches what belongs to Roman Petrov will face more than just my bullets. They will face the family that will replace them."

"Family?" she whispered, the word hanging heavy and terrifying between them.

May you like

Roman leaned in until his lips brushed the shell of her ear, his breath hot against her skin. "Wear the red dress in your wardrobe tonight, Aaliyah. Let them see the blood they failed to spill."
