Chapter 5 - BLOOD ON THE MARBLE

Rain was falling in sheets, turning the winding mountain road leading to the Petrov Citadel into a slick ribbon of mud and black ice.

Aaliyah had stripped off the high heels of her crimson gown, tearing the skirt up to the hip to give her legs freedom of movement. She moved through the freezing black water of the smuggler’s tunnel beneath the boathouse, her hands scraping against wet limestone.

Above her, the world was ending.

The sound of heavy artillery, grenade launchers, and continuous automatic fire rattled the foundation of the estate. Roman had kept his word. He had arrived at the front gates not as a man seeking cover, but as a siege engine. The front lawn was a theater of war.

Aaliyah scrambled up the narrow iron ladder that led into the secret entrance behind the library’s fireplace. Pushing the faux-brick panel open, she tumbled onto the plush Persian rug.

The manor was dark, illuminated only by the strobing muzzle flashes from the courtyard outside and the red emergency lights running along the baseboards.

Two bodies lay near the library doors—Petrov guards, their throats cut cleanly from behind. Voronin’s infiltration had been surgical.

Aaliyah didn't hesitate. She picked up a discarded Glock 19 from the fallen guard's holster, checked the chamber—one round in the pipe, full magazine—and sprinted down the long, shadowed hallway toward Leo’s bedroom.

The heavy steel door of the boy’s suite was dented.

Two men in black tactical gear were working a hydraulic spreader against the frame. Behind them stood Mikhail Tarasov himself—a broad, bear-like man with a scarred scalp, holding a heavy revolver.

"Hurry up, you idiots!" Tarasov spat in Russian. "Petrov has already breached the courtyard! We take the boy and we leave through the helipad!"

Aaliyah stepped out of the shadows.

"Step away from the door," she said.

Tarasov turned, a sneer forming on his thick lips as he took in the sight of a woman in a shredded red ballgown, soaked in river water, holding a pistol with both hands.

"The little nanny," Tarasov laughed, raising his revolver. "Voronin told me Roman had taken a whore into his bed. Put the gun down, girl, and maybe I'll let you—"

Aaliyah did not let him finish his sentence.

*Safety off. Sight alignment. Breathe out. Squeeze.*

She fired twice.

The first shot took the technician on the hydraulic spreader through the neck. The second hit Tarasov in the right shoulder, spinning him violently around and knocking the revolver from his grip.

The second technician lunged at her.

Aaliyah fired again, but the man tackled her before the bullet could find a vital organ. The impact slammed her against the opposite wall, the breath knocked from her lungs as the gun flew from her hand.

Hands clamped around her throat. The man was massive, smelling of stale sweat and gunpowder, his knees pinning her hips to the floor as his thumbs dug into her trachea.

Spots danced before Aaliyah’s eyes. She clawed at his wrists, her vision darkening, the edges of the hallway fading into red and black.

*No. Not here. Not while Leo is behind that door.*

She reached down with her right hand, her fingers finding the small, sharp object tucked into the slit of her dress.

The broken crystal stem of the champagne glass she had kept hidden in the fabric.

With a final, desperate heave of strength, she drove the jagged glass upward, straight into the side of her attacker’s neck.

The man let out a wet, gargling wheeze. His grip slackened. Blood poured over her chest, hot and thick, as he collapsed sideways.

Aaliyah rolled over, coughing violently, sucking in ragged breaths of air. She dragged herself across the floor toward the dropped Glock, her fingers closing around the grip just as Mikhail Tarasov, clutching his bleeding shoulder, raised a backup pistol from his boot.

"Bitch—" Tarasov snarled.

A heavy boot crashed through the window at the end of the hall.

Roman Petrov did not use the stairs. He had scaled the exterior trellis, his tuxedo torn to ribbons, his face streaked with blood and rain. He hit the floor like an avenging demon, his assault rifle raised.

Before Tarasov could pull his trigger, Roman fired a single round through the Russian boss’s kneecap.

Tarasov collapsed with a blood-curdling scream.

Roman walked forward slowly, the rifle barrel smoking in the cold air entering through the shattered window. He did not even look down as he kicked Tarasov’s weapon down the stairwell. He stopped over the groaning rival boss, placed the heavy muzzle directly against Tarasov’s forehead, and pulled the trigger.

The sound was absolute finality.

Silence fell over the hallway.

Roman turned. His eyes, wild and manic with the terror of a father and a lover, found Aaliyah lying against the wall, covered in blood, the crimson dress ruined beyond recognition.

For a second, his knees buckled.

He dropped his rifle, sliding to the floor beside her, his large hands frantically checking her neck, her ribs, her face. "Aaliyah. Aaliyah, look at me. Where are you hit? Where are you bleeding?"

"Not mine," she gasped, catching his wrists, her small hands trembling against his steel grip. "It's... it's not my blood, Roman. I'm okay."

Roman let out a sound that was half-sob, half-growl, and pulled her roughly into his chest. He held her with a ferocity that threatened to crack her ribs all over again, his face buried in her wet, tangled hair, his entire body shuddering with an emotion he could no longer suppress.

"I thought I lost you," he whispered against her temple, his voice breaking completely. "I thought I lost you both."

"We're here," she breathed, wrapping her arms around his broad back, anchoring him just as she had anchored his son. "We're right here."

A soft *click* echoed down the hall.

The heavy steel door of the bedroom swung slowly open.

Leo stood in the threshold. In his hands, he held the wooden baseball bat Roman had bought him for his fifth birthday. He looked at the bodies, then at the blood, and finally at the two people sitting on the floor in each other's arms.

Leo lowered the bat.

He walked forward, his bare feet padding softly against the hardwood, and without a word, he sat down between Roman and Aaliyah, throwing his small arms around both of their necks, pulling their battered, bleeding forms into a single, unbreakable circle.

Roman wrapped his long arm around both of them, his eyes closing as he pulled his entire world against his chest.
