Chapter 4 - THE POISONED WELL

The Grand Belvedere ballroom was a cathedral of decadent corruption.
Crystal chandeliers hung from gilded ceilings, casting a brilliant, diamond light over hundreds of men in bespoke tuxedos and women draped in diamonds and silks. Yet beneath the champagne, the laughter, and the string quartet, the room hummed with the lethal tension of loaded firearms concealed beneath tailored silk.
Aaliyah walked beside Roman, her hand resting in the crook of his arm.
The dress he had chosen for her was an architectural masterpiece of crimson silk. It clung to every curve of her body, parting at the left thigh with an unapologetic slit, the back plunging low enough to display the pale, fading marks of the garage blast—a deliberate, defiant statement to every rival boss in the room.
Roman moved through the crowd like a king walking through a den of wolves that knew he held their leashes. Every conversation died as they passed; every head turned.
"Mikhail is watching from the balcony," Roman murmured, not breaking his stride, his hand coming up to cover hers where it rested on his arm. His touch was warm, grounding her against the overwhelming sea of predatory gazes. "Do not look at him."
"I'm not afraid of him," Aaliyah whispered, lifting her chin.
A ghost of a smile touched Roman’s lips. "I know you're not. That is what makes you entirely magnificent, little bird."
Before she could process the pet name, an older man with silver hair and an impeccably trimmed beard approached them, holding two glasses of champagne. It was Viktor Voronin, Roman’s senior advisor and a man who had served the Petrov family for thirty years.
"Roman," Voronin greeted, bowing his head slightly. His eyes flickered to Aaliyah, lingering for a fraction of a second with cold appraisal before returning to Roman. "A magnificent evening. The elders are already murmuring about your guest. It is... unusual for you to parade your household staff at a council assembly."
"Aaliyah is not staff, Viktor," Roman said, his voice flat and warning. "She is my guest. And you would do well to remember that disrespect toward her is disrespect toward me."
Voronin offered a tight, polite smile. "Of course. My apologies, Miss Campbell. I merely worry about security. The estate's communications array just suffered a minor telemetry glitch. Caruso reports all is well, but—"
Aaliyah’s heart slammed into her throat. "What kind of glitch?"
Voronin blinked, surprised by her interruption. "Just a satellite relay delay. Routine maintenance—"
"The estate doesn't use satellite relays for internal perimeter monitoring," Aaliyah said, her voice dropping into icy focus. "Caruso showed me the blueprint. It runs on a hardwired fiber-optic subterranean line specifically to prevent jamming."
Roman’s entire demeanor transformed in a microsecond. The relaxed, arrogant king vanished; the lethal warlord took his place. He reached inside his tuxedo for his encrypted satellite phone.
No signal.
"The signal dampeners in this ballroom aren't active," Roman muttered, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the room. "Unless someone deployed a localized scrambler."
He looked at Voronin. The old man’s polite smile had not changed, but his eyes were entirely dead.
"You shouldn't have brought her here, Roman," Voronin said quietly. "Elena understood her place. Elena knew that when the syndicate demanded a sacrifice, a wife stayed silent. This girl... she made Leo speak. She made you weak."
"Voronin," Roman growled, his hand dropping toward his concealed weapon.
"It's already done," Voronin whispered. "Tarasov’s secondary strike team didn't hit the garage this time. They are at the front gates of the Citadel right now. By midnight, your bloodline is extinguished, and the council will appoint me regent."
Aaliyah didn't think. The adrenaline from the garage surged back into her veins with electric fury.
She grabbed the crystal champagne flute from Voronin’s hand, slammed the base against the marble cocktail table, and drove the jagged, shattered stem directly into the junction of Voronin’s neck and shoulder.
The old man choked, stumbling backward into a waiter carrying a tray of drinks. The ballroom erupted into chaos—women screaming, men drawing weapons, the string quartet abandoning their instruments in terror.
Roman didn't waste a second. He caught Aaliyah by the wrist, pulling her behind him as he drew his silver-plated 1911 and fired two rounds into the ceiling, the deafening blasts silencing the panic into absolute terror.
"Caruso is compromised or dead," Aaliyah yelled over the rising sirens. "The panic room in Leo’s wing—does it have the override?"
"Only my biometric data can seal it from the outside," Roman shouted back, firing three rounds toward the balcony where Tarasov’s men had begun drawing submachine guns. "He's trapped on the second floor!"
"We have to go!" she screamed.
"Aaliyah," Roman spun her into the service alcove near the kitchen exit, pinning her against the wall with his body as bullets chipped the gilded plaster above them. His hands framed her face, his thumbs wiping away a drop of blood that had splattered onto her cheek. "Listen to me."
"No! We don't have time—"
"Listen to me!" he commanded, his voice raw, desperate, and burning with a passion he could no longer conceal. "If we go in through the main gates, we are walking into a kill zone. I need you to take the river tunnel. The old smuggler’s run beneath the boat house. Leo knows the passage—I showed it to him when he was five."
"You want me to go in alone?"
"You are the only person he will open the door for," Roman said, his forehead resting against hers for a single, breathless second. "I will take the front gate. I will bring the entire wrath of hell to their front line. When they turn to face me, you get my son out."
"Roman—"
He cut her off by crashing his mouth against hers.
It was not a gentle kiss. It was rough, demanding, tasting of smoke and adrenaline and unspoken vows. It was the kiss of a man who knew he might die within the hour, claiming the only woman who had ever reached through his armor and touched his soul.

When he pulled back, his eyes were burning silver. "Save him, Aaliyah. And live. Because if you die, I will burn this entire city to ash, and there will be no one left to bury us."
