Chapter 3 - The Interrogation of Blood and Lace

By 2:00 AM, the rain outside had turned into a fierce thunderstorm. Lightning flashed across the Manhattan sky, illuminating the grand master guest suite where Emma lay sleeping on a king-sized bed wrapped in Egyptian cotton sheets.

I sat on the armchair beside her, unable to sleep.

I was still wearing my black maid’s uniform, though I had taken off my apron. The contrast between my threadbare clothes and the opulent gold-and-ivory bedroom felt absurd.

A quiet knock sounded at the open bedroom door.

Alessandro stood in the doorway. He had removed his tuxedo jacket and black tie. The top three buttons of his white dress shirt were undone, revealing a glimpse of dark chest hair and a faint silver scar near his collarbone. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, exposing thick muscles and dark ink tattoos of olive branches and Latin inscriptions.

In his hand, he carried a small silver tray with a plate of warm food and a glass of red wine.

“You haven't eaten,” he said quietly, stepping into the room.

“I’m not very hungry, sir,” I whispered.

Alessandro set the tray down on the nightstand beside me. He looked at me, his eyes sweeping over my uniform, my tired face, and the dark circles beneath my eyes.

“Stop calling me sir,” he said, his voice a low, commanding rumble. “My name is Alessandro.”

I swallowed nervously. “Alessandro... I’m just a maid. I shouldn't be here. Your men downstairs... they must think—”

“I don't care what my men think,” Alessandro interrupted smoothly, leaning against the bedpost. “You are not a maid in this house anymore, Clara. You never will be again.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black object. The encrypted micro-drive from Mr. Bunny.

“Marco decrypted the files,” Alessandro said, his tone turning dark and cold. “It was all there. Don Eduardo Romano orchestrated the attack on my sister. He wanted control of the shipping ports in Brooklyn. When Sofia discovered his embezzlement, he had her car driven off the pier.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. “And Vivien?”

“Vivien knew,” Alessandro replied, his jaw clenching tightly. “She knew her father murdered my sister. She agreed to marry me so her family could slowly poison my empire from the inside until they controlled everything. She stood in my ballroom tonight, wearing a seven-million-dollar diamond, mocking your daughter for wearing a six-dollar dress—while standing on the blood of my family.”

He looked down at the drive, his hand closing around it until his knuckles turned white.

“They thought they were untouchable,” Alessandro whispered. “They thought time had buried their sins. They never expected a three-year-old girl in secondhand clothes to hold the key to their execution.”

I looked at Emma, who rolled over in her sleep, softly snoring. “What will happen to them?”

Alessandro’s eyes flickered with a terrifying, lethal light, but he smoothed his expression before answering me. “They will pay for what they did. The Five Families have already been summoned for an emergency trial at dawn. By sunrise, the Romano family will cease to exist in New York.”

He stepped closer to my chair. The sheer size of him, the heat radiating from his body, made my breath catch in my throat.

“Tell me about yourself, Clara,” he said softly, changing the subject completely. “How did a woman like you end up scrubbing floors in my estate?”

I looked down at my hands, embarrassed. “My father had gambling debts. When he died three years ago, the loan sharks took everything—our apartment, my savings, my dignity. I was pregnant with Emma. I worked three jobs just to pay for her delivery. When the agency offered me a live-in maid position at the Moretti estate eight months ago, I took it because it meant Emma would have a roof over her head.”

I wiped a stray tear from my cheek, feeling the sting of old memories.

“I saved for two months to buy that pink dress,” I admitted in a whisper, feeling foolish. “I know it was old. I know it had missing beads. But when Emma put it on, she twirled around our tiny servant room and called herself a princess. I just wanted her to feel special for one day.”

Alessandro remained silent for a long moment.

When I looked up, I was shocked to see raw emotion swimming in his dark eyes. He didn't look like a feared Mafia boss. He looked like a man whose heart had just been pierced by the painful beauty of a mother’s love.

Slowly, Alessandro reached out. His large, warm fingers gently cupped my chin, lifting my face toward his. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone, wiping away the tear that had escaped.

His touch was electric. A shiver ran down my spine, not of fear, but of something deep, intense, and long-awakened.

“You are a extraordinary woman, Clara,” Alessandro said, his voice deep, raspy, and filled with a profound reverence that made my breath hitch. “You starved yourself to give her a dress. You endured humiliation to protect her. In a world full of fake gold and blood-stained diamonds, you are the only real thing I have seen in four years.”

Our eyes locked. The room grew impossibly quiet, save for the sound of our breathing and the rain beating against the glass.

Alessandro leaned in slightly, his dark eyes dropping to my lips. For a fleeting second, I thought he was going to kiss me, and to my own shock, I realized I didn't want him to stop.

Suddenly, a muffled boom echoed from the lower levels of the mansion.

The heavy mahogany doors of the penthouse burst open.

Marco rushed inside, his gun drawn, his chest heaving. “Don Alessandro! We have a breach! Romano loyalists just rammed a truck through the rear gates! They’re trying to break into the vault to free Eduardo and Vivien!”

Instantly, the gentle man standing before me vanished.

Alessandro snapped back into the terrifying Don. He pulled a sleek black semi-automatic pistol from a hidden holster beneath his shirt, his posture turning into pure, lethal energy.

“Keep them contained in the courtyard,” Alessandro commanded Marco coldly. “I will be down in ten seconds.”

He turned back to me. His hands caught my shoulders, squeezing firmly.

“Lock this door behind me,” Alessandro ordered, his dark eyes burning into mine. “Do not open it for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?”

“Alessandro... please be careful!” I cried out, grabbing his forearm instinctively.

Alessandro looked down at my hand on his arm. A tight, fierce smile touched his lips.

May you like

“I have something to live for now, Clara,” he whispered. “I won't lose.”

He turned and sprinted out of the room, his gun raised, descending into the dark halls below.
