Chapter 2 - Blood on the MarbleThe moment Marco mentioned Sophia, the ambient temperature in the café seemed to drop below freezing.

Aleandro’s face didn't twist in rage; it became a terrifying mask of absolute death. Before Marco could fully raise his weapon, Aleandro moved with impossible, terrifying speed.

He closed the distance in a heartbeat, his hand clamping around Marco’s wrist like an iron vise. A sickening CRACK echoed through the room as Aleandro shattered Marco's arm, forcing the pistol to clatter uselessly onto the marble floor.

"Aaargh!" Marco screamed, but his cry was cut short as Aleandro grabbed him by the throat and slammed him face-first onto the wooden counter. Glass jars shattered, coffee beans spilled like dark hail, and the remaining three Moretti enforcers drew their weapons.

BANG! BANG!

Gunfire erupted inside the confined space. Aleandro’s two bodyguards instantly drew their suppressed sidearms, dropping two of the attackers before they could clear their holsters. The third enforcer lunged toward Emma, seeking a hostage.

"Emma! Get down!" Aleandro roared.

Emma didn't freeze. Instinct took over. As the gunman reached for her hair, she grabbed a pot of boiling coffee from the burner beside her and hurled the scalding liquid directly into his face.

The man shrieked in agony, clutching his burned skin. Before he could recover, Aleandro was upon him, driving a heavy fist into his jaw, sending him crashing unconscious through a glass display case.

Silence returned to the café, heavy and thick with the smell of gunpowder, copper, and spilled espresso.

Emma stood pressed against the back wall, her hands shaking uncontrollably, her chest heaving as she stared at the carnage before her. Screams echoed from the street outside as terrified citizens fled the area.

Aleandro stood in the center of the room, his white shirt stained with blood that wasn't his own. He straightened his tie, breathing steadily, before turning his gaze toward Emma.

The lethal darkness in his eyes softened the moment he saw her shaking frame. He stepped toward her, stepping over the groaning form of Marco Moretti.

"Are you hurt?" Aleandro asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle as he reached out.

"Don't... don't touch me," Emma whispered, taking a step back, her eyes wide with shock. She wasn't just afraid of the men who had attacked; she was terrified of the casual, brutal efficiency with which Aleandro had dismantled them. "Who... who are you people?"

Aleandro paused, his hand hovering in the air before slowly dropping to his side. "I am the man who protects what is mine."

"I am not yours!" Emma cried, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "I'm just a waitress! I work eighty hours a week to pay off my late father's medical bills! I don't know who these men are, I don't know who you are, and I don't want any part of this!"

Before Aleandro could answer, the front doors burst open again. Victor Bellini hurried inside, flanked by half a dozen heavily armed men. He took in the scene—the bleeding bodies, the shattered glass, and the frantic waitress.

"Police are three minutes out, Boss," Victor reported urgently. "We've jammed the local feeds, but we need to move. Moretti declared war the moment his brother stepped over the line."

Aleandro didn't look at Victor. His eyes remained locked on Emma, watching the sheer terror and confusion warring in her brilliant green eyes.

"Victor, take Miss Carter to the estate," Aleandro commanded.

Emma’s head snapped up. "What?! No! I'm going home!"

"You cannot go home, Emma," Aleandro said firmly, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of her. "Marco Moretti knows your face now. My enemies believe you are important to me. If you walk out that door alone, you will be dead before nightfall."

"Because of you!" Emma spat, her pride overcoming her fear. "I was safe until you and your mother walked into my café!"

Victor stepped forward aggressively. "Watch your tongue, girl! You are speaking to—"

"Silence, Victor!" Aleandro barked, his voice echoing through the ruined room.

Aleandro looked down at Emma. He saw no greed in her eyes, no desire for power, only the fierce, desperate independence of a woman who had fought for everything she owned.

"You are right," Aleandro admitted quietly, surprising both Victor and Emma. "This danger came to you because of my name. And because it is my fault, I swear on my life that no harm will come to you. But you must come with me. Please."

The word 'please' sounded foreign on his lips, a word the Don of the Romano family had not uttered in over a decade.

Emma looked at the shattered café—the place she had swept every night, the counters she had wiped down—now ruined by blood and violence. She looked at Marco Moretti, who was being dragged out by Romano guards, glaring at her with pure murder in his eyes.

She had no choice.

"Fine," Emma choked out, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. "But I am not your prisoner."

"You are my guest," Aleandro corrected softly. "Marco, bring her belongings."

Ten minutes later, a fleet of three armored black sedans sped away from the café, disappearing into the dense morning fog just as the distant wail of police sirens reached the block.

Inside the rear seat of the lead vehicle, Emma sat pressed against the door, staring out at the passing city. Beside her sat Aleandro, quiet and brooding.

Across the city, in a dimly lit warehouse near the docks, Domenico Moretti slammed his fist onto a steel table.

"He broke Marco’s arm?!" Domenico roared, his scarred face twisted in fury.

A beat-up lieutenant nodded nervously. "Yes, Don Moretti. And Romano’s men took him. But... we found out who the girl is."

Domenico leaned over the table, a sinister grin spreading across his face. "Tell me."

"Her name is Emma Carter. Nobody special. But Romano protected her personally. He hasn't looked at a woman like that since Sophia Vance died."

Domenico laughed—a dry, rattling sound that filled the cold warehouse. "Then the universe has handed us a gift. Find out where her family is buried, find out who she owes money to, and find her weakness. If Aleandro Romano has finally found a heart... I am going to tear it out of his chest."
