Chapter 3 - The Gilded CageThe Romano Estate sat atop a private cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean—a sprawling, fortress-like mansion surrounded by stone walls, security cameras, and armed guards patrolling the grounds with attack dogs.

Emma was shown to a magnificent guest suite on the second floor. The room featured a king-sized bed lined with Egyptian cotton, a private balcony facing the misty sea, and an adjoining bathroom made entirely of white Carrara marble.

Yet, to Emma, it felt like the most expensive prison in the world.

She refused to touch the expensive clothes laid out for her on the bed. She remained in her jeans and stained café apron, sitting on the edge of an armchair, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

A knock sounded at the door.

Before she could answer, Rosa Romano walked into the room. She was wearing an elegant dark wool dress, carrying a silver tray with two china cups and a steaming pot of chamomile tea.

"You must be exhausted, child," Rosa said warmly, setting the tray on the glass coffee table.

Emma stood up immediately, her defense mechanisms flaring. "You... you were the woman at the café yesterday. You weren't poor at all."

Rosa offered a soft, sad smile as she poured two cups of tea. "No. I am Rosa Romano. And the man who saved you today is my son, Aleandro."

"Why did you do it?" Emma demanded, her voice trembling with indignation. "Why dress up like a beggar and trick everyone?"

"Because when you live at the top of a mountain built on money and blood, everyone tells you what you want to hear," Rosa explained softly, gesturing for Emma to sit. "People smile at me because they fear my son. They bow to me because they want our favor. I wanted to see how the world treated a powerless old woman. And more than that, I wanted to see if my son’s business was run by monsters."

"And what did you learn?" Emma asked bitterly.

"I learned that the world can be very cruel," Rosa said, looking directly into Emma's eyes. "And I learned that a young woman named Emma Carter possesses more courage and nobility than all the billionaires and mobsters in this city combined."

Emma swallowed hard, the anger draining from her, leaving behind a profound exhaustion. "I don't want nobility, Mrs. Romano. I just want my life back. I want to pay off my dad's debt and open my own little bakery one day. I don't belong in this world."

"Sometimes, child, the world chooses us whether we belong or not," Rosa murmured gently.

At that moment, the door opened, and Aleandro stepped into the room. He had showered and changed into a fresh charcoal suit, though a dark shadow of fatigue hung beneath his eyes.

"Mother, leave us for a moment, please," Aleandro requested respectfully.

Rosa stood up, patting Emma’s shoulder gently as she passed. "Eat something, Emma. You are safe here."

Once Rosa left, the room fell into an uncomfortable silence. Aleandro walked over to the balcony doors, looking out at the crashing waves below before turning to face Emma.

"My legal team has cleared your name of any involvement in the incident at the café," Aleandro began, his tone businesslike, though his eyes were intense. "The police have logged it as an attempted robbery by an unknown gang. Your café manager has been compensated for the damage."

"And my job?" Emma asked quietly.

"The café will remain closed for repairs for two weeks," Aleandro said. "During that time, your full wages will be paid."

Emma let out a bitter laugh. "You think money fixes everything, don't you? You think you can just hand out cash and wipe away the fact that men with guns tried to kill people today?"

Aleandro took three slow steps toward her, stopping just inches away. The scent of rain, cedarwood, and expensive cologne drifted off him, making Emma’s stomach flip.

"I know money fixes nothing that truly matters," Aleandro said, his voice dropping an octave, rich and velvety. "If money could buy peace, I would have spent my entire fortune years ago. I am sorry, Emma. Truly. I never intended for my dark world to touch your light."

Emma looked up into his dark eyes, shocked by the genuine pain she saw reflected there. The ruthless killer from the café was gone, replaced by a man carrying a crushing burden of grief and responsibility.

"Who was Sophia?" Emma asked softly, the name slipping out before she could stop herself.

Aleandro’s body went rigid. For a second, Emma thought he would explode in anger. But instead, he let out a long, weary breath and walked to the fireplace, staring into the cold embers.

"She was my fiancée," Aleandro said softly. "Four years ago, during our turf war with the Moretti family, I was careless. I thought my power made my loved ones untouchable. Domenico Moretti planted a bomb under her car."

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"I watched her die in front of me," Aleandro continued, his voice void of emotion, which made the story even more heartbreaking. "From that day on, I swore I would never let another person close to my heart. I built walls. I became cold. I thought if I cared for nothing, no one could ever hurt me again."

He turned back to look at her, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, terrifying vulnerability.

"And then yesterday," Aleandro whispered, "an exhausted waitress stood up to a bully, gave her own food to a stranger, and looked at the world with eyes full of pure, unadulterated integrity. And for the first time in four years... my heart beat again."

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not from fear, but from a sudden, overwhelming rush of emotion that frightened her far more than Domenico Moretti ever could.

Before she could speak, a sharp knock rattled the door. Victor Bellini stepped inside without waiting for permission, his face pale.

"Aleandro! We have a traitor," Victor declared urgently. "Domenico Moretti just released a public statement to the syndicate council. He knows Emma is here. Worse... he knows about her father's debt."

Aleandro’s eyes flared with lethal fury. "How could he possibly know that?"

Victor glanced briefly at Emma, a dark, calculating glint in his eye. "Her father owed two hundred thousand dollars to a loan shark named Carmine. Domenico just bought out that debt. Technically, legally... Domenico Moretti now owns her family's estate."

Emma felt the room spin beneath her feet. "What?! No! My father took that loan from a bank!"

"Carmine runs the collection arm of that bank, Miss Carter," Victor said coldly. "And right now, Domenico is demanding you be handed over to settle the debt... or he will execute your younger brother, who is currently studying at the university down south."

Emma let out a choked scream, her world collapsing into absolute terror. "Toby! Oh God, no! Not Toby!"

Aleandro moved before Victor could say another word. He grabbed Victor by the lapels of his suit, slamming the consigliere against the wall with terrifying force.

"If anything happens to her brother, Victor," Aleandro growled into his face, "I will skin you alive myself!"
