CHAPTER 2 — THE FATHER WHO CAME BACK

Alexander had always been a difficult man to read.
Even during our marriage.
Even during the years when we shared a home, a child, and a life that looked successful from the outside.
Especially then.
Most people saw a calm businessman with expensive suits and an effortless smile.
They never saw what lived underneath.
The discipline.
The patience.
The absolute refusal to forgive anyone who harmed the people he loved.
As he knelt beside Sofia on my couch, I saw something in his face I had not seen in decades.
Fear.
Real fear.
His hands trembled slightly as he touched her bruised arm.
“Who did this?”
Sofia looked away.
Alexander’s jaw tightened.
“Look at me, sweetheart.”
Slowly, she did.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Carmen,” she whispered.
The room became silent.
Not ordinary silence.
The kind that arrives before something irreversible happens.
Alexander carefully examined the marks on her face.
The bruises around her wrists.
The swelling on her cheek.
The ripped fabric of her wedding gown.
Every injury seemed to carve something deeper into him.
Then he stood.
“Hospital.”
Sofia immediately shook her head.
“No.”
“We’re going.”
“She said they’ll kill me if I report it.”
Alexander stared at her.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then his voice became frighteningly calm.
“No one is killing my daughter.”
I knew that tone.
I remembered it from years ago.
Whenever Alexander became that quiet, someone usually regretted crossing him.
“Dad—”
“Sofia.”
His eyes softened slightly.
“You survived tonight.”
A pause.
“Now let me do my job.”
The emergency room physician documented everything.
Every bruise.
Every cut.
Every sign of assault.
Photographs.
Scans.
Medical reports.
Evidence.
The word kept repeating in my head.
Evidence.
Because what happened in that hotel suite wasn’t a family disagreement.
It wasn’t cultural tradition.
It wasn’t discipline.
It was violence.
Criminal violence.
Alexander sat beside Sofia’s hospital bed throughout the entire examination.
He never left.
Not even once.
At dawn, Detective Rachel Monroe arrived.
A veteran investigator with sharp eyes and no patience for nonsense.
She listened while Sofia described the attack.
The locked hotel room.
The women.
The threats.
The slaps.
Javier standing outside the door.
Listening.
Allowing it.
The detective’s expression darkened with every sentence.
When Sofia finished, Monroe closed her notebook.
“This is serious.”
Alexander folded his arms.
“How serious?”
The detective met his gaze.
“Very.”
“Good.”
The detective blinked.
Alexander’s voice dropped.
“Because I want every person involved charged.”
Later that afternoon, the first shock arrived.
Hotel security footage surfaced.
And it was worse than anyone expected.
The cameras clearly showed Carmen entering the suite.
Six women following her.
Javier speaking briefly with his mother before the door closed.
Then remaining outside for almost an hour.
Not leaving.
Not intervening.
Waiting.
The footage spread quickly through law enforcement channels.
The case became impossible to dismiss.
By evening, warrants were already being discussed.
But that wasn't what made the news explode.
The real surprise came when investigators discovered something else.
Carmen had done this before.
Not exactly this.
But similar.
Three previous complaints.
Three different daughters-in-law.
Three women who later withdrew their statements.
Three women who suddenly decided not to cooperate.
Fear had protected Carmen for years.
This time felt different.
Because this time she had chosen the wrong victim.
That night, Alexander stood alone outside the hospital.
Looking across the Dallas skyline.
His phone rang.
One of his attorneys.
“What do we know?”
The lawyer hesitated.
Then answered.
“A lot.”
“Tell me.”
“The Robles family has significant debt.”
Alexander remained silent.
The attorney continued.
“Their businesses are leveraged heavily.”
“How heavily?”
“Enough that one major investigation could collapse everything.”
Alexander’s expression never changed.
“Keep digging.”
“Yes, sir.”
The call ended.
Another immediately began.
This time a private investigator.
“We found financial pressure.”
“How much?”
“Millions.”
Alexander stared into the darkness.
Suddenly Carmen’s obsession with Sofia’s condo made perfect sense.
It was never greed alone.
It was desperation.
They needed that property.
Needed it badly.
Needed it enough to beat a bride on her wedding night.
Alexander slowly closed his eyes.
Then opened them again.
Cold.
Focused.
Determined.
For the first time since arriving, he smiled.
Not because he was happy.
Because he finally understood his enemy.
And understanding an enemy was often the first step toward defeating them.
Across town, Carmen Robles sat inside her mansion believing she still controlled the situation.
She had no idea investigators were already gathering evidence.
No idea warrants were being prepared.
No idea Alexander had started asking questions.
She poured herself wine and laughed with one of her friends.
“By tomorrow she’ll obey.”
Her friend smiled.
“You think so?”
“She’s young.”
Carmen waved dismissively.
“They always break eventually.”
Then her phone rang.
Javier.
Panicked.
“Mom.”
Something in his voice immediately changed her expression.
“What happened?”
“The police called.”
The wine glass froze halfway to her lips.
For the first time all day—
May you like
Carmen Robles felt afraid.
And the real war finally began.
