Chapter 2 - The Sky Above the AtlanticThe Gulfstream G650 cut through the dark evening sky at forty-thousand feet, its twin engines humming with a smooth, powerful rhythm.

Inside the main cabin, the lighting was warm and soft. Leo was fast asleep on a plush leather sofa, clutching his dinosaur backpack like a shield. Chloe lay beside him under a cashmere blanket, her tiny chest rising and falling in deep, peaceful slumber.

I sat in a wide captain's chair near the window, a crystal glass of sparkling water in front of me, reading the third document from Thomas’s envelope.

It was a medical report from a private clinic in Harley Street, London, dated eight months ago.

The document detailed a consultation between Vanessa Reed and a private reproductive specialist. Attached were financial transfer logs showing six-figure payments made from a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands—a shell company owned by Arthur’s mother, Victoria Vance.

I stared at the paper in utter disbelief.

Victoria Vance had known all along.

Arthur’s mother had hated me from the day Arthur brought me home. To Victoria, my family’s old money was "compromised" because my father preferred quiet philanthropy over Manhattan high-society maneuvering. She had spent years dropping subtle poisons into Arthur’s ear, telling him I wasn't ambitious enough, that I was dragging him down, that a man of his stature needed a dynamic, modern woman by his side.

When Arthur began his affair with Vanessa, Victoria hadn't just approved—she had orchestrated it. She had funded Vanessa’s high-end lifestyle, paid for her London trips, and when Arthur began to hesitate about divorcing me out of fear of public scandal, Victoria and Vanessa had manufactured the pregnancy story together to force Arthur’s hand.

They had built a trap for Arthur, using his own desperate ego as bait.

And Arthur, in his blind thirst for a "male heir" to validate his fragile pride, had walked right into it, tossing away his actual children, his wife, and his entire fortune in the process.

A quiet chime echoed through the cabin. The satellite phone built into the side console began to glow blue.

I picked up the receiver. "Hello?"

"Elena."

The voice was deep, resonant, and carried the unmistakable weight of a man who commanded fleets and empires. Thomas Landry.

"Thomas," I breathed, letting out a long sigh I felt like I had been holding for years. "We are in the air. The kids are sleeping."

"Good," Thomas said, his tone softening with genuine warmth. "I monitored the Manhattan court filings from my office. Arthur’s legal team tried to file an emergency injunction thirty minutes ago to ground your aircraft."

I sat up straight, my heart spiking. "Did they—"

"They failed," Thomas interrupted smoothly. "Judge Miller looked at the notarized global residence authorization Arthur signed in the conference room and threw their motion out within two minutes. He actually reprimanded Marcus Cole for wasting the court's time. You are completely, legally free, Elena."

I closed my eyes, letting the relief wash over me. A single tear escaped, tracing a warm path down my cheek. "I don't even know how to thank you, Thomas. If you hadn't stepped in when you did..."

"Do not thank me, child," Thomas said firmly. "Your father was the noblest man I ever knew. When he died, I promised him I would watch over you. I watched you endure five years of toxic disrespect from that arrogant boy and his manipulative mother. I kept my distance because I needed you to see Arthur for what he truly was. The moment you decided to stand up and protect your children, my resources became yours."

"Did you know about Vanessa’s fake pregnancy?" I asked, looking down at the Harley Street report.

Thomas let out a short, cold chuckle. "Victoria Vance thought she was clever using Cayman shell corporations. She forgot that Landry Maritime owns thirty percent of the banking infrastructure on those islands. I had that report three weeks ago. I chose to let them play their farce out in front of the divorce attorney so Arthur would be so distracted by his imaginary heir that he wouldn't read the financial default rider."

"What happens to Arthur now?"

"Arthur is about to learn what happens when a little boy plays with adult money," Thomas said calmly. "By tomorrow morning, the New York Financial Times will publish the news of Vance Enterprises' loan default. His board of directors will remove him by noon. His mother will try to liquidate her bond portfolio to save him, but she will discover that her portfolio was heavily leveraged against Vance real estate assets."

Thomas paused, his voice dropping into a quiet, protective tone. "Focus on your children tonight, Elena. When you land in Barcelona tomorrow morning, a new life begins. Sitges is beautiful this time of year."

"Thank you, Thomas," I whispered. "For everything."

"Sleep well, Elena. You’ve won the war."
