Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesBack in Manhattan, the mid-afternoon rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the Vance Enterprises boardroom on the 45th floor of a Midtown skyscraper.

The atmosphere inside was suffocating.
Arthur Vance sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table. His designer suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, his hair unwashed. Across from him sat twelve members of the board of directors—men and women who had once laughed at his jokes and toasted his success. Now, they looked at him as if he were a contagious disease.
Beside Arthur sat his mother, Victoria Vance. She looked ten years older than she had forty-eight hours ago. Her crisp Chanel suit couldn't hide the trembling of her hands as she clutched a gold fountain pen.
"This is absurd!" Arthur slammed his palm onto the table, his voice cracking with desperation. "Landry has no legal right to execute a default notice on three days' notice! We have ongoing construction projects in Hudson Yards! We have three commercial towers opening next spring!"
"Arthur, shut up," said Charles Sterling, the eighty-year-old senior board member who had been a business partner of Arthur's late father. Charles’s voice was like gravel. "Landry doesn't just have the right—he holds ninety percent of our underlying debt structure. You signed the callable acceleration rider forty-eight hours ago during your divorce settlement!"
"I was misled by my legal team!" Arthur yelled, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus Cole, who sat silently in the corner of the room with his briefcase packed.
"You weren't misled, Mr. Vance," Marcus Cole spoke up firmly, stepping forward. "I warned you three times in that conference room to review the documents before leaving. You explicitly waved me off, stated that you 'already had the life you wanted,' and walked out the door to go to an ultrasound clinic."
A harsh murmur of contempt rippled through the board members.
"And let's talk about that ultrasound, shall we?" Charles Sterling sneered, tossing a copy of the New York Post onto the center of the table.
The front-page headline was emblazoned in massive black ink:
THE FAKE HEIR & THE FALLEN PRINCE Arthur Vance Loses Empire, Wife, & Unborn Son in 48-Hour High-Society Disaster!
Below the headline was a embarrassing photo of Arthur screaming at NYPD officers outside his condo while Vanessa Reed was loaded into a taxi, weeping hysterically.
Victoria Vance stood up, her face pale with fury. "My son made a personal mistake! That has nothing to do with this company's operations! The Vance family has controlled this firm for thirty years!"
"The Vance family doesn't own this firm anymore, Victoria," Charles Sterling said coldly, pulling out a thick legal document. "Fifteen minutes ago, Landry Global Holdings submitted a formal takeover bid to the Securities and Exchange Commission. They have purchased sixty-five percent of our voting shares from institutional investors who were panicking over Arthur's public scandal."
Arthur gasped, his chest tightening so hard he could barely breathe. "What? Who authorized that?"
"The market authorized it, Arthur," Charles said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Landry Global has appointed a new Chairwoman of the Board to oversee the corporate restructuring."
"Who?" Victoria demanded, clutching her pearl necklace. "Which one of Thomas’s stooges is taking over my husband's legacy?"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Stepping into the room was not a lawyer, nor a corporate raider.
It was Brooke Vance.
Arthur stared at his sister in utter shock. "Brooke? What... what are you doing here?"
Brooke walked calmly to the head of the table, avoiding her brother's eyes. She carried a sleek leather briefcase and was flanked by two high-powered corporate attorneys wearing Landry Global badges.
"I’m here to accept the board's appointment, Arthur," Brooke said, her voice completely devoid of the warmth or loyalty she had shown him two days ago.
"You?" Arthur roared, jumping to his feet. "You betrayed me? I’m your brother! We sat in that divorce room together!"
"And you made an absolute fool of yourself, Arthur!" Brooke snapped back, her eyes flashing with cold ambition. "You destroyed our family name for a gold-digging mistress who wasn't even pregnant! You threw away Elena—a woman who actually gave you two beautiful, healthy children—and you dragged Vance Enterprises into the mud!"
"Brooke, how could you?" Victoria gasped, sinking back into her chair, clutching her heart. "I raised you!"
"You raised us to survive, Mother," Brooke said coldly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a document. "When Thomas Landry offered me five percent equity and the CEO position to cooperate with the board's transition team, I made a business decision. Just like Arthur made a business decision to discard his family."
Brooke turned her gaze to Arthur, her expression hardened like stone.
"Your security clearance has been revoked, Arthur. Security is waiting outside to escort you from the building. You have one hour to clear out your office."
Arthur stood frozen in the middle of the room. The mahogany table, the glass skyline, the family legacy—everything he had spent his life preening over—had been stripped away in a single, brutal blow.

He looked at his sister, then at his mother, who was sobbing into her silk handkerchief. Neither of them looked back at him.
He was entirely, completely alone.
