Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of SitgesThe Spanish morning sun broke over the Mediterranean Sea in brilliant hues of gold, pink, and deep sapphire blue.

A sleek white Mercedes van drove smoothly down the coastal highway winding through Sitges, a historic seaside town twenty miles south of Barcelona. The rocky cliffs dipped dramatically into the turquoise water, dotted with whitewashed villas, terracotta roofs, and blooming bougainvillea.

In the back seat, Chloe pressed her face against the window, her eyes wide with awe. "Mommy, look! The water is sparkling like diamonds!"

"It’s amazing," Leo admitted, dropping his usual stoic eight-year-old act for a moment. "Are those real castles on the hill?"

"They are," I smiled, wrapping my arms around both of them. "And our house is right near one."

The van turned down a private, olive-tree-lined driveway gated by ancient wrought-iron gates. As the gates slid open silently, the full grandeur of Villa Falcone revealed itself.

It was a breathtaking three-story estate built in the traditional Catalan style, featuring white stone walls, arched balconies overlooking the sea, and a massive infinity pool that seemed to spill directly into the ocean below. Surrounding the property were lush Mediterranean gardens, orange groves, and a private stone staircase leading down to a secluded beach cove.

Standing on the front terrace, wearing a linen suit and holding a cane topped with a silver falcon handle, was Thomas Landry.

The van stopped, and the moment the doors opened, Thomas stepped down the stairs. His silver hair caught the sunlight, his sharp blue eyes warm and full of affection.

"Elena," he said, holding out his arms.

I stepped out and threw my arms around him, burying my head shoulder-deep into his jacket. The tension, fear, and exhaustion of the last three years finally melted away completely.

"Look at you," Thomas murmured, pulling back to look at my face, smiling gently. "You have your father's eyes. Strong, clear, and undaunted."

He then looked down at the children. "And who do we have here? Leo and Chloe, I presume?"

Leo stepped forward cautiously, pulling his dinosaur backpack tight. "Are you Mr. Landry?"

"I am," Thomas said, bowing his head slightly with old-world chivalry. "But to you two, you may call me Uncle Thomas. And I believe, Leo, that there is a room upstairs equipped with an entire replica of a Jurassic excavation site waiting for you."

Leo’s eyes went as wide as saucers. "For real?"

"Go on inside," Thomas chuckled, gesturing to a friendly Spanish housekeeper standing by the grand entrance. "Maria will show you both your rooms."

As the kids ran inside, squealing with excitement, Thomas led me toward the terrace overlooking the sea, where a table was laid out with fresh coffee, warm pastries, and sliced Spanish hams.

"They look healthy, Elena," Thomas noted, pouring two cups of dark coffee. "Confused, but safe."

"They were living in a house where their father treated them like background noise," I said, taking a seat and pulling a warm shawl over my shoulders. "Arthur was so obsessed with building his 'legacy' that he forgot his actual children were standing right in front of him."

"Speaking of Arthur," Thomas said, pulling a leather folder from his chair side and laying it on the table. "The drama in New York has reached a fever pitch."

I picked up my coffee, taking a slow sip. "Tell me."

"Arthur spent the entire night at his mother's townhouse in the Upper East Side," Thomas revealed, his eyes glittering with cool amusement. "Once he realized Vanessa wasn't pregnant, he tried to throw her out of his condo. She called the police, claiming domestic harassment. The NYPD had to escort her from the premises while three paparazzi crews filmed the entire thing."

I shook my head, feeling a strange mix of disgust and distant relief. "And his mother?"

"Victoria tried to call me personally six times between 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM," Thomas continued. "When I didn't answer, she sent a letter through her attorneys offering to surrender her shares in Vance Enterprises if I agreed to unfreeze Arthur’s personal accounts."

"Did you accept?"

"Of course not," Thomas said flatly. "I replied with a single sentence: 'The debt is non-negotiable, just as Elena’s dignity was.' By noon today, the board of Vance Enterprises will vote to strip Arthur of his CEO title. He is officially bankrupt, disgraced, and completely powerless."

I looked out over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. For years, I had believed that Arthur held all the cards—that his money, his family's high-society status, and his legal connections made him invincible.

Now, sitting thousands of miles away in absolute luxury, I realized the truth: Arthur Vance had been nothing more than a fragile balloon held together by illusion. The moment someone poked a pin into his vanity, he didn't just leak—he burst completely.

"So," I said quietly, setting my coffee cup down. "What is our next move?"

Thomas leaned back in his chair, a slow, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "Now, Elena... we buy Vance Enterprises for pennies on the dollar, rebrand it under the Carter name, and give your children the empire their father destroyed."
