Chapter 3 - The Gathering of SharksBy Friday afternoon, downtown Monterrey was buzzing with the kind of high-society gossip that wealth-obsessed enclaves like San Pedro lived for. Word travels fast when a prominent real estate developer experiences a sudden, catastrophic legal freefall.

Inside the sleek, glass-walled conference room of attorney Daniel Álvarez’s office, the air smelled of aged leather, fresh espresso, and impending victory.
Elena sat at the head of the table, wearing a clean, dignified navy-blue dress Sofía had bought her that morning. Gone was the exhausted, broken woman in the damp basement; here sat the true matriarch of the Morales estate. Beside her sat Sofía, her posture proud and unyielding.
Daniel Álvarez closed a thick leather binder and looked across the table. "Doña Elena, the court executed the asset freeze within two hours of our filing. Not only have we blocked Rogelio from touching your Santa Catarina warehouses, but we also audited the accounts he’s been managing. He drained over four million pesos from your primary pension and dividend accounts over the last thirty-six months to fund his personal lifestyle and speculative construction projects."
Sofía gasped, turning to her grandmother. "Four million pesos? That’s theft, plain and simple."
"It’s worse than theft," Daniel continued, sliding a separate document forward. "It’s criminal embezzlement. When we present these bank statements to the judge on Monday, Rogelio won't just lose control of the properties—he could be facing a multi-year prison sentence."
Elena lowered her gaze, a deep, complex shadow crossing her features. For a long moment, the room was completely silent. Despite everything Rogelio had done—despite the cold basement, the stale tortillas, and the psychological abuse—she was still his mother.
"Will he actually go to prison, Daniel?" Elena asked softly, her voice carrying the heavy burden of maternal instinct.
"Doña Elena, your son didn't just neglect you; he systematically abused an elderly person under his legal care to line his own pockets," Daniel replied gently but firmly. "If we show leniency now, he will find another loophole, another way to manipulate you or someone else. He built his entire life on the assumption that power protects the powerful. We have to show him that the law applies to everyone."
Sofía reached across the table, covering her grandmother’s trembling hand with her own. "Grandma, you survived his cruelty because you are strong. But if you back down now, he wins. He’ll never stop trying to take what is yours."
Before Elena could answer, the frosted glass door of the conference room swung open with a loud crash.
Stepping into the room, breathing heavily and looking completely unraveled, was Rogelio Morales. His expensive Armani suit was rumpled, his tie was loosened, and his eyes were wide with a manic desperation. Trailing closely behind him was his private defense attorney, a sweating man in a cheap gray suit who was desperately trying to pull him back.
"Mom!" Rogelio shouted, ignoring the lawyers and striding directly toward the head of the table. "Have you completely lost your mind? Are you sitting here conspiring with strangers to destroy your own flesh and blood?"
Sofía sprang to her feet, placing herself physically between her father and her grandmother. "Get back, Dad! You have no right to be here! The court order explicitly prohibits you from coming within five hundred meters of my grandmother!"
Rogelio didn't even look at Sofía; his gaze was locked entirely on Elena, his expression twisting from panic into bitter rage.
"Mom, tell these clowns to drop the lawsuit!" Rogelio demanded, slamming his palm onto the mahogany table. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The bank just canceled my construction loan! My entire reputation in San Pedro is destroyed! People are laughing behind my back at the country club! After everything I’ve done for you—housing you, feeding you, taking care of your medical needs—this is how you repay me?"
Elena slowly stood up from her chair. Despite the height difference and her fragile frame, her presence dominated the room. The years of intimidation dissolved in an instant under the clear, piercing gaze of a woman who had seen empires rise and fall.
"You housed me in a freezing semi-basement with a broken window, Rogelio," Elena said, her voice steady, cold, and echoing with absolute authority. "You fed me cold turkey scraps while you and your wife feasted upstairs. You stole my pension, intercepted my mail, and tried to strip me of my dignity because you were too arrogant to earn your own wealth."

Rogelio’s face flushed purple. "That’s a lie! You’re senile! You don't even know what day it is! The court-appointed doctors will prove you’re mentally incompetent!"
"I am perfectly competent," Elena said, stepping around the table until she stood face-to-face with her son. "And on Monday morning, the only thing the judge is going to look at is the trail of financial ruin you left behind. Get out of my sight, Rogelio. You are no longer my son."
