Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe weekend in Monterrey passed in a blur of escalating tension and corporate chaos.

While Rogelio scrambled desperately to find emergency bridge loans to save his failing real estate developments, the legal trap closed in around him from every direction. Daniel Álvarez’s firm uncovered three separate shell companies Rogelio had set up in the Cayman Islands, all funded with capital illegally siphoned from Elena’s industrial holdings.

By Sunday evening, Marisol had packed her bags and left the San Pedro estate, taking her designer clothes and luxury vehicles to stay with her sister in Guadalajara, leaving Rogelio completely alone in the echoing, half-furnished mansion.

Monday morning arrived with a heavy, gray drizzle that slicked the asphalt of downtown Monterrey.

The courtroom of the Second Civil Court was packed to capacity. Reporters from local newspapers and financial blogs filled the wooden benches, whispering excitedly as rumors of the Morales family feud leaked to the press.

Rogelio sat at the defendant’s table, flanked by his jittery defense lawyer. He looked ten years older than he had a week ago; his hair was uncombed, his skin sallow, and his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.

Across the aisle sat Elena, looking radiant in her navy-blue dress, supported by Sofía and attorney Daniel Álvarez.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Mario Garza," the bailiff called out.

The judge entered, a stern-looking man with silver hair and sharp, analytical eyes. He sat down, adjusted his reading glasses, and looked over the towering stack of legal briefs sitting before him.

"Be seated," Judge Garza commanded. He glanced down at the case file. "We are here to review the emergency injunction petition filed on behalf of Elena Morales against Rogelio Morales, concerning allegations of elder abuse, asset misappropriation, and fraudulent power of attorney execution."

For the next two hours, Daniel Álvarez presented a masterclass in forensic litigation. He projected bank statements, wire transfer logs, notarized land deeds, and medical affidavits onto the courtroom’s digital screens. He showed the court how Rogelio had systematically isolated his seventy-four-year-old mother, locked her in an uninsulated sub-basement during freezing winter nights, and diverted millions of pesos in rental income from the Santa Catarina industrial lots into his own private accounts.

When Rogelio’s attorney attempted to argue that Doña Elena was suffering from cognitive decline and had willingly signed over administrative control, Daniel countered with a pristine, state-certified psychiatric evaluation performed by an independent medical board just forty-eight hours prior, proving conclusively that Elena possessed full mental clarity and acute cognitive faculties.

Judge Garza listened intently, his expression darkening with every piece of evidence presented.

Finally, the judge looked directly across the courtroom at Rogelio.

"Mr. Morales, do you have any defense to offer against these overwhelming findings of financial malfeasance and elder endangerment?"

Rogelio stood up slowly, his hands trembling. He looked toward the gallery, hoping to catch his mother’s eye, hoping for a shred of family loyalty. But Elena looked back at him with a quiet, impenetrable calm.

"Your Honor... I am her son," Rogelio stammered, his voice cracking. "I was just trying to manage the estate efficiently. The properties required professional oversight—"

"The properties required a thief," Judge Garza interrupted sharply, his voice ringing through the quiet courtroom. "What you did wasn't management; it was predatory exploitation of the most cowardly kind. You took the woman who gave you life and treated her like an indentured servant in her own home."

The judge picked up his heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a resounding crack.

"The court hereby rules in favor of the plaintiff. All powers of attorney granted to Rogelio Morales are permanently revoked, effective immediately. Full administrative control, ownership titles, and financial accounts associated with the Morales estate are restored unconditionally to Doña Elena Morales. Furthermore, the court is forwarding these files to the Federal Attorney General’s office for criminal prosecution regarding embezzlement and elder abuse."

A collective gasp swept through the gallery camera flashes popped from the back of the room as Rogelio sank back into his chair, utterly defeated, his empire reduced to dust.
