Chapter 2 - The Sovereign's Sanctuary

The private medical wing of the Whitaker Memorial Hospital did not look like a hospital at all. It was located on the top floor of the limestone building overlooking the dark, expansive waters of Lake Michigan. The floors were covered in thick wool carpets that muffled every footstep, and the walls were adorned with original oil paintings from the family's private collection.

Amelia lay on her stomach on the specialized medical bed, her face turned toward the large window. The storm was beginning to pass, the dark clouds parting to reveal the first faint cracks of a cold grey dawn over the lake.

A team of three specialists, led by Dr. Elizabeth Vance, had spent the last two hours treating her. The physical trauma was severe: nineteen distinct lacerations and deep contusions across her back, shoulders, and thighs. Her left rib was fractured, and her right wrist was sprained from where she had tried to shield herself during the initial strikes.

Dr. Vance quietly stepped away from the bed, pulling her spectacles down as she addressed Charles, who stood by the door, his eyes never leaving his daughter.

"She is stable, Charles," Dr. Vance said in a low, gentle voice. "The physical wounds will heal with time. We’ve applied a specialized topical regenerative matrix to prevent scarring on her back, but the deeper tissue damage will require intense physical therapy. And the psychological trauma..."

"She is a Whitaker, Elizabeth," Charles said, his voice flat. "She will survive. But the man who did this will not."

"I’ve documented every single injury," Dr. Vance said, handing him a secure leather folder. "High-definition forensic photography, 3D medical scans, and toxicological reports. It’s all here. If you decide to go to the District Attorney, this is enough to secure a Class 1 felony conviction for aggravated domestic battery."

"We will not just go to the District Attorney," Charles said, taking the folder. "We will dismantle them systematically."

He walked over to the side of the bed, sitting down in the soft leather armchair. He reached out and took Amelia's hand. Her fingers were cold, but her grip was surprisingly firm.

"How do you feel, my beautiful girl?" he asked softly.

Amelia looked at him. The swelling on her left cheek had gone down slightly, but the purple bruise beneath her eye was a stark, ugly contrast to her pale skin.

"I feel... lighter, Dad," she whispered. "For seven years, I felt like I was carrying his weight. Every time he failed, I felt like it was my job to fix it. Every time his mother made those horrible comments about my family, I stayed quiet because I didn't want to cause trouble. I thought... I thought if I worked hard enough, he would love me the way I loved him."

She let out a dry, shaky breath, her eyes filling with a cold, beautiful resolve.

"But when that cane hit my back the first time, I realized something. He didn't love me. He loved the power my father's name gave him. And when he realized he couldn't control that power, he tried to destroy me."

Charles’s hand tightened around hers. "He will never touch you again, Amelia. The legal team is already drafting the divorce papers. Katherine Vance is on her way from New York. She will handle the dissolution of your assets."

Amelia sat up slowly, despite the pain that flared through her ribs. She refused to stay lying down. She pulled the silk robe over her shoulders, her movements deliberate and focused.

"No, Dad," Amelia said, her voice growing stronger. "I don't want Katherine to just handle the divorce. I want to be the one who signs the acquisition papers for AsterGrid."

Charles raised an eyebrow, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "You want to take the company from him?"

"He built that company on my back," Amelia said, her blue eyes shining with a cold, absolute fury. "He used my inheritance to fund the initial research. He used your name to secure the venture capital. He used my design studio to create their entire brand identity. He thinks he’s a genius. I want him to watch me sit in his chair, in his office, while he’s led away in handcuffs."

The door to the private suite opened, and Naomi Pierce stepped in. Her face was calm, but her eyes held a sharp, professional satisfaction.

"Mr. Whitaker, Miss Amelia," Naomi said. "The financial markets have just opened in New York. The pre-market crash of AsterGrid has turned into a total panic. The stock is currently trading at seven dollars and forty cents down from its fifty-two-week high of eighty-nine dollars."

"And Grant?" Amelia asked.

"He’s spent the last three hours calling every member of the board," Naomi said, a cold smile playing on her lips. "But none of them are taking his calls. Our legal team has already contacted the independent directors. We have offered to buy out their shares at a premium if they vote to remove Grant Lowell as CEO immediately, citing the moral turpitude clause in his contract."

"What about the mistress?" Amelia asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Sloane Reeves."

"We’ve done a deep dive into her financial records," Naomi said, opening her folder. "It seems Miss Reeves has been using her position as CFO to siphon funds from AsterGrid’s offshore holding companies. She’s been transferring millions into a private shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. We have the wire transfers, the IP addresses used to authorize the transactions, and the forged financial audits she submitted to the board."

Amelia looked at her father. "Did Grant know?"

May you like

"He either knew and was complicit," Charles said, his voice cold, "or he was so blinded by his own arrogance and lust that he let her rob him blind. Either way, it’s grand larceny. It’s federal bank fraud."

"Let's make sure they both share a cell," Amelia said, her voice steady and absolute. "Naomi, call a press conference for tomorrow morning. I want it held in the lobby of the AsterGrid building. I want the entire world to see what happens when you try to break a Whitaker."
