Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Slaughter

The rain had stopped, but the streets of Chicago remained wet and grey under a heavy blanket of autumn fog.

The AsterGrid executive boardroom was a masterpiece of modern design: a massive glass table surrounded by ergonomic leather chairs, overlooking the city skyline. But today, the room felt like a tomb.

Grant Lowell sat at the head of the table, his face pale, his hair disheveled. He had been in the office for thirty-six hours straight, surviving on stale coffee and pure, adrenaline-fueled panic. Beside him sat Sloane Reeves, her fingers frantically tapping on her tablet, her usual composed, arrogant expression replaced by a look of sheer, frantic terror.

"They’re voting," Grant muttered, his voice hoarse. "The board... they’re holding an emergency meeting via video conference right now. They’re going to remove me, Sloane. They’re going to remove me from my own company."

"They can't do that without a majority vote!" Sloane hissed, her eyes wild. "We still have the support of the Miller group and the Henderson estate! They control thirty percent!"

"The Miller group sold their shares three hours ago, Sloane!" Grant screamed, slamming his hand onto the glass table. "They sold them to Whitaker Global! Don't you get it? Charles Whitaker owns us now! He has the majority! He has the board!"

Before Sloane could answer, the double glass doors of the boardroom swung open.

Grant stood up, expecting to see his security guard or his secretary.

Instead, he saw Amelia.

She walked into the room with a grace and authority that made his breath catch in his throat. She was dressed in a tailored navy blue suit, her hair styled in a sleek, professional chignon. She wore no makeup except for a subtle rose lipstick, but her blue eyes were so cold they looked like chips of ice. The only visible sign of her ordeal was the slight, careful way she moved to avoid putting pressure on her fractured ribs.

Behind her walked Charles Whitaker, his silver-topped cane clicking softly against the marble floor. Behind them were Naomi Pierce, Katherine Vance, and four uniformed Chicago police officers.

"Amelia," Grant gasped, his voice trembling. He took a step toward her, his face instantly shifting to a look of desperate, pathetic pleading. "Amelia, please. Thank God you're okay. I was so worried. I... I didn't mean what happened. I was drunk, I was stressed, the company was under so much pressure—"

"Shut up, Grant," Amelia said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it had a weight that silenced the room instantly.

She walked to the opposite end of the long glass table, standing directly across from him. She did not sit. She stood, her hands resting flat on the polished glass, looking at him as if he were an insect beneath a microscope.

"You have no right to be in this building!" Sloane Reeves yelled, standing up beside Grant, her voice high-pitched and hysterical. "This is private corporate property! Security, get them out of here!"

"Actually, Miss Reeves," Katherine Vance, the elite attorney, said, stepping forward and placing a thick legal document on the table. "As of 8:00 AM this morning, Whitaker Global has acquired a fifty-one percent controlling interest in AsterGrid Technologies. Miss Amelia Whitaker has been appointed as the interim chairperson and CEO by a unanimous vote of the reconstituted board. You, however, are no longer employed here."

Sloane’s face went white. She looked at Grant, then back at Amelia. "This is a hostile takeover! It’s illegal! We will file an injunction—"

"You won't have time to file anything, Sloane," Amelia said, her eyes shifting to her former CFO. "Naomi, show them."

Naomi Pierce stepped forward, opening her tablet and casting a series of financial documents onto the massive digital screen on the wall.

"These are the wire transfers from AsterGrid’s offshore development fund," Naomi said, her voice clear and professional. "Over the past eighteen months, a total of fourteen point six million dollars was transferred from our accounts to a shell company called 'Aegis Holdings' in the Cayman Islands. The sole signatory for Aegis Holdings is you, Sloane. And the IP addresses used to authorize every single one of these transfers were traced directly to your personal laptop and your apartment."

Sloane collapsed back into her chair, her eyes wide with terror as she stared at the screen. "I... I didn't... Grant told me to do it! He knew about it!"

"That’s a lie!" Grant screamed, turning on her, his face red with panic. "I didn't know anything about this! She set me up! Amelia, you have to believe me! I would never steal from the company! She’s the one who’s been lying to me!"

Amelia looked at her husband, her expression filled with a profound, sickening disgust.

"You are so pathetic, Grant," she said softly. "You beat me because you thought I was the one who was weak. You thought that by breaking my body, you could make yourself feel like a king. But look at you now. You’re ready to throw your mistress under the bus the second you’re cornered. You’re nothing but a coward."

"Amelia, please," Grant wept, dropping to his knees on the carpet, reaching out toward her across the glass table. "We’ve been together for nine years. We built this life together. Don't let them do this to me. I love you. I’ve always loved you."

Amelia did not flinch. She did not look away. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the hickory cane, placing it gently on the glass table between them.

The sound of the polished wood hitting the glass was like a gunshot in the silent room.

Grant froze, his eyes staring at the dried blood on the cane.

"You beat me twenty times with this cane, Grant," Amelia said, her voice dropping to a whisper that vibrated with a cold, absolute power. "You broke my ribs. You tore my skin. You left me to bleed to death on our floor while you went to celebrate with your mistress. And now, I am going to make sure you spend the rest of your life in a concrete room, remembering every single strike."

She looked at the police officers standing by the door.

"Officers," Amelia said, her voice steady and clear. "Arrest them."
