Chapter 4 - The Exposure of the Sham

The arrest of Grant Lowell and Sloane Reeves was not a quiet affair.
As the police led them out of the AsterGrid lobby in handcuffs, the doors swung open to reveal a wall of reporters, television cameras, and flashing lights. The news of the billionaire’s daughter being brutally assaulted, combined with the multi-million dollar corporate embezzlement scandal, had turned the story into a national media feeding chain.
Grant tried to hide his face against his shoulder, his expensive suit rumpled, his wrists bound in steel. Beside him, Sloane was weeping hysterically, her silver-bobbed hair falling over her face as reporters shouted questions at them.
"Mr. Lowell! Did you beat your wife to cover up the financial fraud?" "Sloane! Is it true you siphoned fifteen million dollars from the company?" "Grant! How does it feel to lose AsterGrid in less than twenty-four hours?"
They were bundled into the back of separate police cruisers, their doors slamming shut to block out the flashing lights.
Inside the building, Amelia stood in the center of the lobby, surrounded by her father, Clara, and their legal team. The lobby’s glass walls showed the chaotic scene outside, but inside, the air was clean, quiet, and triumphant.
"You did beautifully, Amelia," Clara said, wrapping her arms gently around her sister, mindful of her bruised ribs. "Our mother would have been so proud of you today."
"Thank you, Clara," Amelia whispered, leaning against her. "But it’s not over yet. They’re going to try to post bail. Richard Lowell, Grant’s uncle, has a lot of connections in the legal system. He’ll try to get the charges reduced."
"He can try," Charles Whitaker said, stepping forward, his silver-topped cane resting firmly on the polished stone floor. "But I have already spoken to the Chief Judge of the Cook County Circuit Court. The bail hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning. We are presenting the forensic evidence, the laptop recordings, and the offshore bank records. There will be no bail, Amelia. They will remain in custody until the trial."
"And the company?" Amelia asked, looking up at the massive AsterGrid logo mounted on the lobby wall.
"The company is yours, Amelia," Charles said, his eyes filled with a pride that warmed her entire chest. "I’ve transferred the controlling interest into your personal trust. You are the sole owner. You can keep it, sell it, or burn it to the ground. It is your decision."
Amelia looked at the logo, then at her sister Clara, and finally at her father.
For seven years, she had lived in a gilded cage, believing that her identity was tied to being Grant Lowell’s wife. She had shrunk herself to fit into his narrow, insecure world.
But as she looked at her reflection in the glass walls of the lobby, she didn't see a victim. She saw a woman who had survived the fire, and who was now ready to rebuild her world from the ashes.

"We aren't going to burn it, Dad," Amelia said, a beautiful, confident smile breaking across her face. "We’re going to rename it. From today on, AsterGrid is going to be Whitaker Technologies. And we are going to use its infrastructure to fund a national foundation for survivors of domestic abuse."
"A magnificent idea, my girl," Charles said, his voice thick with emotion. "A truly magnificent idea."
