Chapter 2 - The Guest at the Gates

The front door opened with a sharp, familiar click of the electronic lock. Grant’s booming, confident laugh echoed through the high-ceilinged foyer, a sound designed to project absolute competence and masculine warmth to anyone within earshot.

"Right this way, Mr. Cross," Grant was saying, his tone dripping with the smooth, sycophantic reverence he reserved for senior leadership. "We are absolutely honored to welcome you to our home. My wife, Claire, has spent the afternoon preparing a special menu for us. She’s a wonderful homemaker—a bit shy, as I mentioned on the golf course, but she keeps our sanctuary running flawlessly."

I stepped out of the kitchen, wiping my hands on a crisp white linen towel.

Grant stood in the center of the foyer, his tailored navy blazer immaculate, his teeth flashing in a brilliant, practiced smile. He had his arm extended toward the open door, guiding our guest inside with the fluid grace of an experienced politician.

And then, Julian Cross stepped across the threshold.

My older brother looked exactly as he did on the covers of the international financial journals—tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp, piercing grey eyes that could freeze a corporate board with a single glance. He wore a charcoal-grey wool coat over a bespoke Italian suit, his posture carrying an unyielding, military precision.

Grant had never met him in person before tonight. Because Julian had spent the last four years managing the European expansion of Mercer Dynamics from London, Grant had only seen his name on corporate memos and global financial authorizations. He knew I had a brother overseas, but because I had taken our mother’s maiden name, Bennett, after her second marriage, Grant had spent three years calling my family "a collection of useless academic drifters" without ever bothering to look up their legal registry.

Julian’s eyes swept across the foyer, bypassing the expensive modern artwork and the polished hardwood floors. He locked onto me.

His gaze moved instantly to the high collar of my black dress, then to the slight, artificial stiffness of my left cheek where the heavy layer of concealer was doing its silent work. A dangerous, lethal spark flared deep within his grey eyes—a shadow of the protective older brother who used to shield me from the world when we were children. But his face remained a perfect, unreadable mask of corporate dignity.

"Mr. Cross, this is my beautiful wife, Claire," Grant said, stepping forward and gently but firmly grasping my elbow, his fingers pressing into the faint bruise beneath the silk sleeve as a silent warning to stay compliant. "Claire, sweetheart, this is Julian Cross. The man who is going to help us take the regional division to the national level."

I extended my hand. "It is an absolute pleasure to meet you, Mr. Cross. Welcome to our home."

Julian took my fingers in his, his grip warm, steady, and filled with a silent, unspoken promise. "The pleasure is entirely mine, Mrs. Mercer. Your husband has told me a great deal about your... dedication to his career."

"She’s my rock, sir," Grant beamed, completely oblivious to the trap that had just closed around his neck. "Please, let’s move into the dining room. The first course is already served."
