Chapter 4 - The Dissolution of a Shadow

Grant’s hand began to shake, his fingers losing their corporate stiffness as he stared down at the glowing screen. His thumb hovered over the glass for three agonizing seconds before he finally pressed the play icon.
The quiet, architectural dining room was instantly filled with the sound of his own voice—harsh, vicious, and completely stripped of its polished executive charm.
“You forgot the salt... You embarrass me in my own house... How difficult is it to make one decent meal?!”
The audio was followed immediately by the sickening, heavy sound of a hand striking flesh, the rattle of kitchen cabinets, and the low, muffled sound of my own voice apologizing through the pain.
Grant leaped to his feet, his chair screeching violently against the hardwood floor. "This... this is a domestic fabrication! Mr. Cross, I swear to you, this is an AI-generated deepfake! My wife... she’s been experiencing severe psychological issues for over a year! She’s been fabricating these files to ruin my reputation because she’s unstable—"
"Shut your mouth, Grant," Julian said.
He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer, absolute authority behind the command made Grant freeze instantly, his breath catching in his throat.
Julian stood up slowly, his tall frame completely dominating the room, casting a long shadow over the dinner table. He walked around the mahogany wood, stopping three inches away from me. He reached down, his large, steady fingers gently turning my chin toward the candlelight.
With a slow, deliberate movement of his thumb, Julian rubbed against my left cheekbone. The thick layer of flesh-colored cosmetic cream smeared away, revealing the angry, swollen violet contusion hidden beneath.
Grant’s jaw dropped, his knees visibly trembling against the edge of his chair. "Mr. Cross... I... I didn't... it was an accident..."
"You called my family a collection of useless academic drifters for three years, Grant," I said, standing up and stepping away from his reach, my voice perfectly clear and devoid of the fear he had spent years installing in my mind. "You never asked who paid my university tuition, who gave us the down payment on this house, or why Mercer Dynamics suddenly decided to fast-track your application for regional director shortly after our wedding."
Grant looked from me to Julian, his eyes darting back and forth as the final, horrifying realization hit his brain. "Cross... Bennett... Oh my god."
"Julian is my older brother, Grant," I said, picking up the smart tablet from the sideboard and opening the live banking ledger. "And as of 5:00 this morning, the state financial crimes division has taken over the audit of Mercer Dynamics' regional infrastructure accounts. The two hundred thousand dollars you stole from my mother's inheritance trust wasn't just a domestic dispute. It was the exact evidence Julian needed to trigger a forensic investigation into your entire corporate sector."

"You're done, Mercer," Julian said, his voice carrying the finality of a judge passing sentence. "The board has already signed the termination order. Your corporate assets are frozen. Your security clearance is revoked. And the two detectives sitting in the unmarked car outside your driveway are currently waiting for my signal to execute the warrant for felony assault and corporate grand larceny."
Grant collapsed back into his chair, his face entirely grey, his chest heaving with a hollow, broken panic as the world he had built out of locked doors and hidden bruises collapsed into a pile of ash.
