Chapter 3 - The Taste of Truth

The dining room was illuminated by the soft, flickering light of six white beeswax candles. The silver cutlery caught the light, and the three bowls of wild mushroom soup sat on porcelain chargers, thin wisps of steam rising into the cool air of the room.

Grant took his seat at the foot of the table, gesturing for Julian to take the seat of honor at the head, while I sat along the side, positioned perfectly between them.

"I must say, Grant," Julian said, unfolding his linen napkin with a slow, deliberate movement. "Your performance metrics in the northeastern quadrant have been very impressive this quarter. The board was particularly interested in the cost-reduction strategies you implemented for the infrastructure projects."

Grant leaned forward, his eyes shining with the manic energy of a man who could see the vice presidency within his grasp. "Thank you, sir. It’s all about resource allocation. Eliminating waste, ensuring absolute discipline in the ranks, and making sure that every asset is fully utilized under my direct supervision."

"Discipline," Julian repeated softly, picking up his silver soup spoon. "Yes. You’ve always been a man who values control, haven't you, Grant?"

"In every aspect of life, Mr. Cross," Grant smiled, picking up his own spoon. "Without structure, things fall apart. A man has to maintain order in his division... and in his household."

Grant took a large, confident spoonful of the mushroom soup. He swallowed it instantly, his smile remaining fixed for a fraction of a second before his features suddenly convulsed.

The massive amount of salt I had stirred into the pot hit his taste buds like a physical blow. His eyes widened, his throat contracting as he fought the immediate, visceral urge to gag. His face turned a dark, sudden crimson under the candlelight, his knuckles turning white around his spoon as he forced the bitter, burning liquid down his throat.

He shot a furious, murderous glare across the table at me—a look that promised a level of violence that would make the night before look like a warning. He wanted to scream. He wanted to flip the table. But his boss was sitting three feet away, watching him with an unblinking, analytical intensity.

"Is something wrong with the soup, Grant?" Julian asked, his voice completely calm, his own spoon resting untouched against the edge of his bowl.

"No!" Grant choked out, his voice hoarse, his hand reaching frantically for his water glass and draining it in three large gulps. "No... it’s... it’s absolutely wonderful, sir. Just a bit... robust in its seasoning. Claire occasionally... miscalculates the balance."

"I don't think she miscalculated at all, Grant," Julian said, slowly setting his napkin down on the table. He leaned back in his leather chair, his grey eyes turning into two chips of ice. "In fact, I think she added exactly the right amount of salt to make the truth clear."

Grant blinked, his water glass freezing halfway to the table. "Sir? I... I don't follow."

Julian reached into the breast pocket of his charcoal suit jacket and pulled out a sleek, black smartphone. He slid it across the polished mahogany table, right past my bowl, until it came to rest against the edge of Grant’s charger.

On the screen was a live, high-definition display of the medical report from the local emergency room, dated three months ago, alongside a clean, crystal-clear audio waveform file titled: Kitchen_Incident_July16.

"Go ahead, Grant," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the room feel instantly devoid of oxygen. "Press play. Let’s listen to how you maintain discipline in your household."
