Chapter 1 - The Catalyst

The metal rod slipped from Álvaro’s fingers, clattering loudly against the ancient stone tiles of the courtyard. For a second, the only sound was the heavy, rhythmic panting of a man whose entire universe had just started to tilt off its axis.

“Give me that card,” Álvaro muttered, lunging forward with a desperate, clawing motion.

He was too late. I scooped Lucía up into my arms—ignoring the sharp, burning agony tearing across my back—and stepped swiftly backward, placing the protective barrier of the heavy oak doorway between us. My attorney, Sophia Sterling, whom I had quietly alerted via an emergency GPS ping right before walking into the estate, stepped out from the shadow of the colonnade flanked by two private federal marshals.

“Step back, Mr. Sterling,” Sophia’s voice cut through the damp morning air like shattered glass. “Any interference with evidence or harassment of a protected minor will be added immediately to the federal indictments being filed this morning.”

Mercedes clutched the lapels of her designer jacket, her knuckles stark white. “You—you planned this! This is a trap!”

“A trap?” I looked down at the blood staining my blouse, then up at the woman who had watched me get beaten without blinking an eye. “No, Mercedes. A trap is what you and Álvaro built for me to force my signature on Monday’s asset transfer. What is happening right now is simply reality catching up with you.”

Verónica’s composure finally fractured. Her manicured hands flew to her face, her voice rising in panic. “Álvaro, do something! Call your contacts! Don't let her walk out of here with that!”

Álvaro stared at me, his eyes wide, devoid of the smug confidence he had worn just moments earlier. He looked at Lucía, then at the marshals, and finally at the small black rectangle clutched tightly in my daughter's hand.

“You’re ruining everything,” he whispered, sounding less like a ruthless corporate heir and more like a terrified child.

“No, Álvaro,” I said softly, turning my back on the family that had tried to destroy me. “I am merely stopping you from finishing what you started.”
