Chapter 5 - Reclaiming What Was Lost

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the towering bay windows of the estate, illuminating a house that finally felt clean, peaceful, and safe.
The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of Mercedes’s tyranny was gone. The rooms had been thoroughly cleared of the old, dark furniture, replaced with bright colors, fresh flowers, and the sound of laughter.
Lucía sat at the large marble kitchen island, happily coloring a picture of a soaring eagle while eating sliced strawberries.

I walked over, kissed the top of her bright, expressive head, and pulled out the chair beside her. “No, sweetheart. We are right where we belong. This is our home now.”
Sophia arrived shortly after, carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a final stack of paperwork from the family court judge. She dropped them onto the counter with a satisfying thud.
“It’s officially done,” Sophia smiled, taking a seat. “Divorce granted on grounds of extreme emotional abuse and fraud. Full, uncontested custody of Lucía awarded to you. And as for Álvaro and Mercedes... well, federal sentencing guidelines suggest they won't be seeing daylight anytime soon.”

I looked out the window toward the garden where the gravel path still bore the faint marks of that terrible morning. The pain in my back had faded to a dull ache, but the memory served as a permanent reminder of strength I didn't know I possessed.
“Good,” I said quietly. “Let them spend the rest of their lives figuring out how to build something honest from scratch.”
