Chapter 4 - The Legal Checkmate

Within forty-eight hours, the Sterling empire completely imploded under the weight of federal indictments, asset seizures, and unassailable evidence.
The courthouse steps in downtown Toledo were swarmed with reporters, flashing camera bulbs, and microphone booms as Mercedes and Álvaro were led out in handcuffs. Mercedes kept her face shielded beneath a heavy cashmere scarf, refusing to look at the cameras. Álvaro, however, caught sight of me standing near the courthouse gates with Sophia and Lucía.
He broke away from the federal marshals for a fraction of a second, his eyes bloodshot and desperate.
“Elena! Please!” he shouted over the roar of the crowd. “We have a history! We have a family! You can’t do this to me!”
I didn't flinch. I didn't raise my voice. I simply looked at him the way one might look at a stranger who had tripped over his own feet on the sidewalk.

“The person you tried to destroy was never weak, Álvaro,” I said clearly, my words captured by a dozen directional microphones. “You just chose to mistake kindness for helplessness.”
Sophia handed the final batch of transfer documents to a federal prosecutor, officially dissolving every vestige of corporate control the Sterling family held over my assets, my trust, and my estate. The mansion outside Toledo, the luxury vehicles, the bank accounts—everything was legally restored to my sole ownership, completely untangled from their fraudulent debt.
