Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room Table Turn

By noon, the news had broken.

Financial news networks interrupted their regular morning broadcasts with breaking ticker tape headlines: APEX DEVELOPMENT CEO ETHAN CARTER DETAINED AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS; CORPORATE RESTRUCTURING UNDERWAY.

Down at the central police precinct, Ethan was having the worst morning of his life.

He had spent three hours screaming at his defense attorneys, demanding to know why Judge Navarro’s emergency release order had been blocked, why his corporate accounts were frozen, and why his senior vice president wasn't answering his calls.

When the heavy metal door of the interrogation room finally creaked open, Ethan jumped up from the bolted steel chair, his expensive suit wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes wild with desperate rage.

“Vance! Finally!” Ethan snarled, stepping forward. “Get me out of this damn room! Sue the hospital, sue the cops, sue my wife—!”

He stopped dead in his tracks.

It wasn't Marcus Vance who walked through the door.

It was me.

I walked into the cold, windowless interrogation room with measured, deliberate steps. I wasn't wearing my hospital gown anymore. I wore a sharp, charcoal-gray wool pantsuit that mirrored the colors of his own designer suit, and my posture was completely upright. Behind me stood Officer Ramos, holding a thick manila folder.

Ethan stared at me as if I were a ghost.

“Elena?” he whispered, his voice cracking. A confused, pathetic laugh escaped his lips. “What... what are you doing here? Did they force you to come down here? Did Liam put you up to this? Get me a lawyer, Elena, get me out of here—”

“Sit down, Ethan,” I said softly.

The calm, terrifying stillness in my voice made him freeze.

“You’re my wife,” he stammered, his bravado rapidly crumbling into panic as he clutched the edge of the steel table. “You belong to me. We’re partners! Tell these idiots to drop the charges—tell them it was a mistake, that I didn't mean to—that you slipped in the shower—”

“I didn't slip in the shower, Ethan,” I said, walking slowly around the table until I stood just inches away from him.

The stark fluorescent light caught the faint, fading bruises along my jawline—bruises he had put there because I dared to ask for a financial audit.

Ethan swallowed hard, his eyes darting around the sterile room like a trapped animal. The polished, untouchable founder of Apex Development was entirely gone, replaced by a frightened, small man who realized for the first time that his cruelty had consequences.

“What... what do you want?” he whispered, his voice shaking.

I opened the manila folder and slid a single sheet of paper across the metal table.

It wasn't a divorce petition.

It was a complete asset forfeiture and corporate resignation agreement.

“Sign this,” I said quietly.

Ethan glanced down at the paper, his eyes widening in horror as he read the bold headings. “Surrender all equity? Resign all board positions? Transfer all personal real estate holdings—including the Westlake mansion—into the corporate trust? Elena, you’re taking everything! How am I supposed to live? How am I supposed to pay my legal defense?”

“That isn't my concern,” I replied, my voice as cold as ice. “You spent five years treating me like a piece of furniture you could lock in a room whenever you grew tired of my voice. You thought you could break me until I had nothing left to say.”

I leaned in close, my eyes locking onto his with absolute, unyielding power—the exact same distance he had leaned down to whisper his final threat before my head hit the kitchen floor.

“You never learned when to keep your mouth shut, Ethan,” I whispered into the quiet room. “And now, you don't get to speak at all.”

Ethan stared at me, his chest heaving with ragged breaths. He looked at the pen resting beside the paper, then up at my face, searching for a shred of mercy, a hint of the woman who used to make him coffee every morning.

May you like

There was nothing left. Only ash and steel.

With trembling fingers, Ethan picked up the pen, and signed his name away.
