Chapter 5 - The Fall and the Verdict

The trial didn't last long. In the end, a mountain of forensic accounting evidence, encrypted server logs, medical trauma reports, and a signed asset forfeiture confession left Ethan’s high-priced legal team with virtually nothing to argue.
The presiding judge didn't buy the "accidental fall" defense for a single second.
When the verdict was finally read on a crisp autumn afternoon three months later, the courtroom was packed with journalists, financial analysts, and public spectators.
“On the charges of felony domestic abuse, aggravated assault, and corporate wire fraud,” the judge announced, his voice echoing solemnly through the wood-paneled courtroom, “this court sentences the defendant, Ethan Carter, to twelve years in federal correctional custody without the possibility of parole for the first six years.”
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.
Across the room, Ethan sat slumped at the defense table, his head bowed, his tailored suit now replaced by an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely over his shoulders. He didn't look up as the bailiff placed handcuffs on his wrists and led him away through the secure side exit.
The golden boy of Santa Fe’s real estate scene had vanished, leaving behind only a disgraced criminal whose name was already being scrubbed from every plaque, foundation, and building facade across the city.
As I walked out of the courthouse steps into the bright autumn sunlight, a sea of microphones and camera flashes rushed toward me.
Journalists shouted over one another.
“Mrs. Carter! Are you taking over as permanent CEO of Apex Development?” “Will you be pressing charges against the board members who enabled the fraud?” “What do you have to say to survivors of domestic violence watching this trial?”
I stopped at the top of the courthouse steps. I didn't hide behind sunglasses, and I didn't look down at the pavement. I looked straight into the camera lenses, carrying the quiet dignity of a woman who had reclaimed her life from the ground up.
“Apex Development is undergoing a complete moral and structural transformation,” I said clearly, my voice steady and resonant. “We are establishing a permanent corporate fund dedicated entirely to supporting survivors of domestic abuse and financial entrapment across the city.”
I paused, letting the words settle over the crowd.

“To anyone who believes they are trapped behind locked doors, silenced by fear, or told they have no voice left: You are not alone. And the foundation you are building in secret just might be strong enough to bring down empires.”
With that, I turned away from the cameras and walked down the steps toward a waiting car where Liam was holding the door open with a proud, warm smile.
