Chapter 6 - A New Horizon

Six months later, the penthouse office on the twenty-fourth floor of Apex Tower—now officially renamed Carter-Vance Global (though soon to be rebranded entirely)—looked entirely different.
The heavy, oppressive mahogany furniture Ethan had favored was gone, replaced by light oak, minimalist architecture, and walls of thriving green indoor plants that brought warmth and life into the corporate space.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a ceramic mug of hot tea, looking out at the panoramic view of Mexico City wrapped in a soft afternoon glow.
The scars on my ribs had faded into faint, silvery lines. The shadows beneath my eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, unshakeable peace.
A soft knock sounded at the office door.
“Come in,” I said.
The door opened, and Liam walked in carrying a stack of final audit reports. He wasn't wearing his hospital scrubs today; he was dressed in a casual weekend blazer, having taken the afternoon off to celebrate the final closure of the corporate transition.
“The federal compliance audit is officially signed off,” Liam announced with a wide grin, setting the folder down on my clean, uncluttered desk. “Not a single discrepancy left. Your forensic restructuring is airtight.”
“It took a lot of late nights,” I smiled, walking over to sit at the desk.
“How are you holding up?” Liam asked softly, pulling up a chair across from me and looking at me with that familiar, protective brotherly warmth. “Really?”
I took a slow sip of my tea, feeling the warmth spread through my chest.
“For a long time, I thought surviving meant hiding,” I murmured, looking out at the endless horizon of the city. “I thought if I just kept my head down, stayed quiet, and absorbed the blows, I could eventually find a way out without breaking anything.”
“And now?” Liam asked gently.
“Now I know that breaking things is sometimes the only way to build something real,” I said, meeting his gaze with absolute confidence. “I’m not hiding anymore, Liam. Every time I walk through these doors, every time I sign a document using my own name, I am reminded that no one else holds the pen to my life.”
Liam reached across the desk and tapped his coffee mug against mine.
“To new foundations,” he toasted.
“To freedom,” I replied.
Down on the busy streets far below, the city hummed with unstoppable, vibrant life. Cars moved in steady streams, people walked hand in hand under the afternoon sun, and the world kept turning.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just watching the world from behind a locked door.
I was walking right through the center of it, and the ground beneath my feet was entirely my own.
