Chapter 1 - The Pulse of VengeanceThe air in the cathedral was suffocating, heavy with the cloying scent of lilies and the sharp, artificial sharpness of Tessa Lane’s designer perfume. I lay perfectly still, my heart rate manually controlled by the cocktail of suppressants Dr. Lin had administered. I was a ghost in my own body, a witness to my own wake.

Jenna’s smile from the front pew was the only anchor I had to the living world. She knew. She had been the architect of this morbid theater, the one who had secured the mortuary staff and ensured that the "cause of death" on my certificate was as final as it was falsified.
"My inheritance should be settled today," Grant had whispered. The sheer audacity of his greed made the blood in my veins hum with a cold, electric fury. He wasn't just mourning; he was auditioning for a life of luxury built on my ashes. He stood there, the grieving widower, while his mistress—the woman who had watched me wither away in chemotherapy—brushed a stray hair from his jacket.
Tessa leaned closer to the coffin again. She couldn't help herself. The cruelty was the point. "You’re finally silent, Claire," she hissed, low enough that only I could hear. "I hope you can see us from whatever hell you landed in. Grant is finally mine."
I felt the urge to open my eyes, to scream, to watch the color drain from their faces as they realized their prize was not a corpse, but a predator. But Jenna’s eyes caught mine—well, the space where my eyes were closed behind thin lids—and she gave a barely perceptible shake of her head. Not yet.
Grant reached out, his hand hovering over the edge of the mahogany coffin. For a fleeting second, I thought he might touch my hand—the very hand that had gripped his so tightly during our wedding vows eleven years ago. But he didn't. He checked his watch instead.

"We’re going to be late for the reading," he said, his voice flat.
He didn't look at me. He looked at the exit. He looked at his future, unaware that his past was currently playing dead, waiting for the exact moment to reach out and pull him down into the dark.
