The wind picked up, rustling the golden leaves of the maple trees that lined the pasture.

Garrett Lawson’s name was already fading from the financial pages, replaced by new scandals and shifting markets. In prison, he was learning what it meant to live without a safety net, without a woman funding his vanity, and without a single person willing to look him in the eye with respect.

Eleanor Lawson had sold her Manhattan apartment at a forced bankruptcy auction, moving into a modest studio apartment on the outskirts of Queens where no one knew her name and no one cared about her pedigree.

Chloe Sinclair was awaiting trial, abandoned by Garrett and facing the full legal weight of corporate conspiracy charges.

None of them mattered anymore.

I looked down at my hands. The heavy diamond engagement ring and the platinum wedding band were gone, replaced by the cool, clean air of a life reclaimed.
