Chapter 1 - The Descent from the Clouds

The pressure inside the cabin of Flight 1404 bound for Miami hissed as the aircraft leveled off at thirty-thousand feet, but the real drop in air pressure had happened the moment Elena walked down the aisle and slid her carry-on into the overhead compartment of Row 7.
Julian’s face had lost every vestige of color. The smooth, rehearsed charm he had cultivated over twelve years of corporate climbing and double-dealing dissolved instantly, leaving behind a look of trapped, animal panic. Beside him, Chloe—dressed in an oversized designer sweater and a pair of large Gucci sunglasses pushed up onto her head—blinked in sudden confusion, looking between Julian’s blanched features and the composed woman standing in the aisle.
“Julian,” Elena said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, melodic calm that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. “You dropped your composure.”
“Elena... what—what are you doing here?” Julian stammered, his fingers clawing desperately at the armrest of seat 7A. He glanced wildly around the cabin, terrified that the surrounding passengers would recognize the domestic catastrophe unfolding in middle-tier economy plus.
Elena pulled her boarding pass from her pocket and tapped it lightly against her palm. Seat 7C. The aisle seat directly beside the two of them.
“Traveling,” she replied evenly.
She didn't wait for an invitation. She simply slid past Julian’s trembling knees, settling into her seat with the deliberate grace of a queen taking her throne. The scent of Chloe’s synthetic, over-priced jasmine perfume hung heavy in the recycled air, a cheap imitation of the subtle French lavender Elena wore.
Chloe finally found her voice, turning to Julian with a sharp edge of annoyance. “Julian, who is this? You said your wife was taking Maya to visit her sister in Vermont this weekend.”
“She was,” Julian choked out, sweat now beading along his hairline. “Elena, please... let’s not make a scene. Let me explain. We can talk about this when we get back to Boston. Just... go back to first class or check if there’s another seat—”
“There isn't,” Elena interrupted, turning her head slowly to look Julian dead in the eye. Her gaze was completely devoid of the tears or screaming he had secretly braced himself for. It was colder, sharper—the look of a woman who had spent twelve years balancing corporate architecture blueprints and household budgets, finding every single structural flaw in his life. “And I’m not going anywhere. In fact, Julian, I think we have a three-hour flight to catch up on old times. Specifically, the part where you pretend you're presenting to a client in Chicago while flying your junior marketing specialist to a five-star resort in Miami.”
Chloe gasped, shrinking back against the window seat 7A as the realization crashed over her. “You lied to me too? You told me your divorce was already finalized!”

“He lies to everyone, Chloe,” Elena said, pulling a slim leather folder from her tote bag and placing it calmly on the tray table. “It’s his primary skill set. Unfortunately for him, professional liars always forget that details leave a paper trail.”
Julian’s hands were shaking so violently he had to shove them deep into the pockets of his designer jacket. He stared at the leather folder, recognizing the embossed logo of the Boston private investigative agency stamped faintly in the corner. His throat tightened. The illusion he had built—the suburban family man facade that secured his corporate sponsorship and mortgage approvals—was disintegrating at thirty thousand feet, miles away from any lifeline he could manipulate.
