Chapter 2 - The Art of the Asset Strip

While the flight attendant moved down the aisle murmuring polite inquiries about beverage choices, the row 7 configuration had turned into a silent, suffocating pressure chamber.
Julian leaned across the armrest, his voice reduced to a desperate, rattling hiss. “Elena, name your price. Do you want the house? The car portfolio? I’ll sign the deed over. Just don’t do this here. Not now. We can handle this like civilized adults through our lawyers—”
“Oh, your lawyers are already busy, Julian,” Elena replied without looking up from her tablet, which she had propped open on the tray table. “Or rather, my lawyers are.”
With a single tap on her screen, Elena opened a secure email thread timestamped 8:45 AM that morning—right after she had taken her seat on the tarmac. It was addressed to Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Litigation, alongside a forensic accountant specializing in offshore asset concealment.
Julian’s breath hitched as he caught a glimpse of the document headers. Restraining Order & Emergency Asset Freeze: Cross-Holdings LLC.
“You can’t do that,” Julian whispered, panic making his voice crack. “Cross-Holdings is my primary investment vehicle! If you freeze those accounts, the entire acquisition deal with the Pacific Group collapses by Monday morning! That’s a twenty-million-dollar merger!”
“Was a twenty-million-dollar merger,” Elena corrected smoothly. “Past tense, Julian. Did you really think that after twelve years of designing homes and commercial spaces, I wouldn't notice when twenty-five percent of our liquid capital vanished into an unregistered Bahamian shell corporation? You used our home equity line of credit three months ago to fund your lifestyle with Chloe. You forged my signature on the secondary loan documents.”
Chloe froze beside the window, her jaw slackening. “You used home equity loans? Julian, you told me you were a multi-millionaire venture capitalist!”
“Shut up, Chloe!” Julian snapped, turning on her with a flash of genuine venom before looking back at Elena with pleading, bloodshot eyes. “Elena, please. If the board finds out about the fraudulent loan documents, I’ll be indicted. I won't just lose my job—I’ll go to federal prison. Think of Maya. What will this do to our daughter?”
“I have thought about Maya,” Elena said, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly quiet that Julian felt physically ill. “For twelve years, I protected her from your narcissism while you treated our home like a hotel and our savings account like your personal dating fund. Maya stays with my sister. She’s safe, she’s loved, and she doesn't have a father who trades her future for a twenty-nine-year-old marketing assistant.”

Elena typed a quick response to her attorney on the screen, confirming the execution of phase two: the immediate notification of the corporate compliance board at Julian’s firm regarding corporate fraud and marital dissipation of assets.
Julian slumped back against his seat, defeated. The flight had barely reached cruising altitude, yet his entire world, his career, his social standing, and his stolen future had been completely dismantled in less than twenty minutes.
