Chapter 3 - Landing in the Crosshairs

The descent into Miami International Airport was bumpy, tossed about by coastal squalls that mirrored the turbulent atmosphere trapped inside Row 7. Throughout the remainder of the flight, neither Julian nor Chloe spoke a single word. Chloe spent the final hour staring blindly out the window, quietly sniffling into a paper napkin as the reality of her entanglement with a ruined, married corporate fraudster set in.

When the aircraft finally touched down with a heavy screech of rubber against wet tarmac, the passengers began unbuckling their seatbelts with the usual hurried rustle of carry-on bags.

“Stay seated,” Elena instructed, not even bothering to look at Julian as she calmly zipped her laptop case.

“Elena, please,” Julian pleaded one last time, his voice hollow. “Let’s just take a cab to the hotel, we can sit down over a drink, and we can figure out a quiet divorce settlement. No courts, no public scandal.”

“There won't be a quiet settlement, Julian,” Elena said as the seatbelt sign chimed off. “There will be an accounting.”

As she stepped out into the aisle, she didn't head toward the exit queue leading to baggage claim. Instead, she paused near the front galley where two airport security officers, summoned via discreet communication from the pilot at Elena’s prior request, were waiting alongside a process server holding a thick Manila envelope.

The lead officer stepped forward, his eyes scanning the passengers. “Mrs. Elena Cross?”

“Yes, officer,” Elena replied clearly.

The officer turned his gaze toward Julian, who was nervously squeezing out of the row behind Chloe. “Julian Cross?”

Julian swallowed hard, taking a step back. “I... yes. What is this about?”

The process server stepped around the officer and shoved the heavy envelope directly into Julian’s chest. “You’ve been served, Mr. Cross. Emergency civil injunction filed by Vance & Sterling on behalf of Elena Cross, freezing all personal and corporate assets, demanding an immediate forensic audit, and summoning you to the Suffolk County Superior Court on Monday morning at 9:00 AM sharp.”

A murmur rippled through the deplaning passengers crowding the aisle. Chloe gasped, grabbing her handbag and pushing past the security guard to flee down the jet bridge, completely abandoning Julian to his fate.

Julian stared at the envelope in his hands as if it were a venomous snake. His legs trembled, and for a terrifying second, he looked as though he might collapse right there on the synthetic carpet of the jet bridge.

Elena looked down at him—not with anger, not with triumph, but with the quiet, absolute detachment of an architect surveying a condemned building before the demolition crew moved in.

“Have a safe trip back to Boston, Julian,” Elena said softly. “You’ll need to find your own flight home. My ticket was one-way.”
