Chapter 4 - Unraveling the WebBy evening, the estate was profoundly quiet. The police had come and gone, Beatrice had been escorted off the property by a local taxi with her designer luggage piled awkwardly on the curb, and Savannah finally stood alone in the expansive kitchen where her life had nearly been destroyed.

She walked over to the sink, splashed cool water on her face, and gently tended to the red welt on her cheek. The physical pain was sharp, but it was nothing compared to the clarity she felt now that the parasites had been purged from her life.
Sitting at the kitchen island, Savannah opened her laptop to review the second phase of her financial audit. What she uncovered next was even worse than she had initially suspected. Christopher hadn't just stolen from their emergency fund or his former company; over the past four years, he had taken out three secret high-interest loans using forged signatures on joint credit lines, attempting to finance speculative real estate ventures that had completely collapsed. If Savannah had waited even one more month to execute her forensic review, those debts would have legally defaulted onto her personal credit score, destroying her career as a senior financial auditor.
Her phone buzzed violently against the marble. It was an unknown number, followed by a stream of frantic text messages.
It was Christopher, calling from the precinct holding facility.
She let it ring out. Then she blocked the number.
Within minutes, an email pinged in her inbox—a message from Christopher’s court-appointed defense attorney, begging for a closed-door meeting to discuss a settlement before formal grand jury indictments were filed the following morning.

Savannah typed a single, unequivocal response: See you in court.
She closed her laptop, poured a glass of crisp white wine, and walked out onto the back patio. The night air was cool, carrying the scent of pine and absolute freedom. For seven years, she had lived in a cage built of other people's expectations and debts. Now, the locks were hers, the house was hers, and the future was entirely untethered.
