Chapter 5 - Picking Up the PiecesThe weeks following the arrests were a whirlwind of legal depositions, asset redistribution, and media storms. The financial press had a field day with the scandal, splashing headlines across every major newspaper: “Venture Capital Empire Collapses: Billionaire and Betrayed Wife Expose Massive Corporate Fraud Syndicate.”

Gavin was denied bail due to the severe flight risk posed by his offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and he was currently sitting in a federal holding facility awaiting trial. Julianna, stripped of her corporate power and facing identical felony charges, had quickly turned on her co-conspirators in a desperate plea bargain, confirming every detail of the embezzlement scheme we had uncovered.

With the federal freezing orders lifted on legitimate personal holdings, the courts officially restored my rightful share of our foundational assets, granting me complete ownership of our original real estate portfolio, unencumbered by a single penny of fabricated debt.

I stood on the private balcony of my newly renovated penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park, sipping a cup of hot herbal tea as the crisp spring breeze kissed my skin. The heavy weight that had crushed my chest for twenty-eight years was completely gone. I wasn't the invisible housewife hiding in the shadow of a cheating husband anymore. I was an independent businesswoman, a survivor, and the sole architect of my own destiny.

My phone chimed on the patio table. It was a text message from an unfamiliar number that I had memorized by heart: “Downstairs. Open the door.”

I smiled, setting my teacup down and walking inside.

When I opened the private elevator doors to the penthouse foyer, Harrison was standing there holding a single white orchid—simple, elegant, and timeless. He looked exceptionally handsome in a charcoal wool coat, the subtle scent of cedarwood filling the hallway.

“You look breathtaking, Bethany,” Harrison said softly, stepping inside and handing me the flower.

“You’ve brought me flowers three times this week, Harrison,” I teased lightly, burying my face in the delicate petals. “People might start talking.”

“Let them talk,” he replied, stepping closer until I could feel the familiar, intoxicating heat radiating from his chest. “Besides, we’ve earned the right to do whatever we want.”

He reached out, his warm fingers gently tracing my jawline, tilting my chin upward so my eyes met his dark, intense gaze.

“My divorce was finalized this morning,” Harrison murmured, his voice dropping an octave, filled with raw, undeniable sincerity. “Every asset, every account, every obligation tying me to Julianna is gone. I am entirely, completely my own man.”

My breath hitched in my throat. “And what does that mean for us?”

Harrison smiled—not the dangerous, calculating smile he wore in boardrooms, but a warm, genuine smile meant only for me. “It means the war is over, Bethany. Now, we get to build something real.”
