Chapter 1 - The Lockdown of the Grand BallroomThe metallic thud of the double oak doors sealing shut echoed like a thunderclap across the marble floor of the Grand Belvedere Hotel. The heavy brass latches engaged automatically, followed by the electronic whine of security locks engaging throughout the entire floor.

Chloe stood frozen with her bare hand still raised in the air, her bridal veil slightly askew. Beside her, Eleanor—her mother, whose face had been twisted in triumphant malice just moments prior—turned her head sharply toward the main entrance. The soft string quartet music sputtered out as the musicians nervously lowered their bows.
"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor snapped, stepping forward on her designer heels, ignoring the torn pink chiffon of my dress scattered at her feet. "Daniel, call hotel management immediately. Tell them their automatic system is malfunctioning. This is a private reception!"
Daniel didn't move. He stood holding my empty purse, his eyes darting between my pale face and the high, arched double doors.
"Vivienne..." Daniel’s voice trembled, a faint crack breaking through his usual polished, submissive demeanor. "What did you just do? Who did you call?"
I didn’t answer him. I didn't owe him a single breath. Instead, I gathered the remnants of my ruined maternity gown closer around my chest. The silk was slashed down to the waistband, exposing the soft, white cotton lining underneath and the defined curve of my eight-month belly. Every eye in that 200-guest room was pinned on me—some filled with cruel amusement, others with uncomfortable pity, but none had raised a hand to stop Eleanor when she stepped on my dress. Not one of Daniel’s wealthy relatives or high-society friends had uttered a word of objection when Chloe demanded I be stripped and searched like a common thief.
"She’s bluffing!" Chloe shouted, her voice rising to a shrill pitch that vibrated against the crystal chandeliers. She kicked my spilled prenatal vitamins across the polished floor with the point of her satin heel. "Look at her! She comes from a family of nobodies! Her father is probably a small-town mechanic or a broke accountant. What is he going to do, call the local sheriff?"
Laughter rippled through the front tables—the side of the room where the Vance family inner circle sat. Eleanor’s sisters, draped in diamond necklaces and Italian velvet, smirked into their champagne flutes.
"I always said Daniel married beneath him," murmured Aunt Beatrice loudly enough for the second row to hear. "A girl with no bloodline, no fortune, relying entirely on the Vance name for a lifestyle she could never afford."
Eleanor took two steps toward me, her arms crossed over her chest. "Pick up your trash, Vivienne. Clean up this mess, apologize to my daughter for ruining her wedding night with your dramatic antics, and maybe—just maybe—we won't press charges for theft once we find where you hid Chloe's vintage solitaire."
I stood straight, my spine rigid despite the cold air draft hitting my exposed shoulders. "I didn't touch her ring, Eleanor. And you are about to regret touching me."
"Oh, really?" Eleanor sneered. "And who is going to make me? Your father?"
Before the sentence fully left her lips, the massive projection screens at the front of the ballroom—which had been displaying a slideshow of Chloe and her new husband’s engagement photos—flickered violently. The romantic jazz music playing softly over the venue's surround system cut out, replaced by a low, mechanical hum.
The screens went pitch black.
A collective murmur drifted through the audience. Daniel took a step closer to me, reaching out to touch my arm. "Vivienne, stop whatever game you're playing. My mother is an influential woman in this city. If you embarrass the Vance family in front of the press tonight, I won't be able to protect you."
I looked down at his hand on my sleeve—the hand that had handed my personal belongings to my tormentors without a second thought.
"You never protected me, Daniel," I said softly, my voice cold enough to freeze water. "Not three years ago when your mother called my mother’s vintage pearls cheap trinkets. Not last Christmas when Chloe made me sit at the staff table. And certainly not tonight."
I brushed his hand away.
Suddenly, a brilliant golden crest flashed onto the center projection screen. It was an intricate emblem featuring a stylized crown wrapped in twin dragons, framed by three bold initials: S.V.G.
Gasps instantly tore through the elder members of the audience.
Uncle Richard, the patriarch of the Vance family’s real estate empire, stood up so fast his chair screeched against the floorboards. His face lost all color. "Is that... the Sovereign Sterling Group logo?"
"Sovereign Sterling?" Eleanor chuckled nervously, glancing at her brother. "Richard, don't be ridiculous. That’s an international conglomerate. They own half the commercial real estate on the Eastern seaboard. What would they have to do with—"
The screen shifted. A live video feed connected.
A tall, distinguished man with silver hair, impeccably tailored in a double-breasted charcoal suit, appeared on the giant display. He was sitting at a massive mahogany desk inside a high-rise office overlooking the lit skyline of Manhattan. His features were sharp, his eyes a piercing dark hazel—the exact same eyes I inherited.
Beside him stood three men in dark suit jackets, holding thick leather-bound folders, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Belvedere Hotel network, who looked as though he was on the verge of fainting.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," my father, Arthur Sterling, spoke into the microphone. His voice was quiet, calm, and utterly suffocating in its absolute authority. "I apologize for interrupting the festivities. However, a situation has arisen on the premises of my property that requires my immediate personal intervention."
Eleanor blinked, her voice faltering as she stared at the screen. "Your... your property?"
"The Grand Belvedere Corporation," Arthur continued smoothly, not even acknowledging Eleanor directly, "was acquired by Sovereign Sterling Group six months ago. As the primary shareholder and Chairman, I hold absolute operational authority over every building, every employee, and every security protocol within this institution."
The ballroom went deathly quiet. You could hear the faint drip of water from an ice sculpture near the buffet table.
Daniel’s jaw dropped. He slowly turned his head to look at me, his eyes wide with absolute horror. "Vivienne... Sterling? Your last name..."
"When I met you, Daniel, I used my mother’s maiden name, Vance," I said, looking him dead in the eye. "I wanted to know if you loved me for who I was, not for my father's balance sheet. My father warned me that your family was driven by greed. He begged me to test your loyalty. I spent three years giving you every chance to prove him wrong."
I pointed down at the floor, where my torn dress lay over my scattered keys and prenatal vitamins.
"And tonight, you gave him your answer."
Chloe’s breath hitched. "No... no, this is a mistake! You're lying! She’s a schoolteacher! She drives a five-year-old sedan!"
"She drives that sedan because she values humility, something your family clearly lacks," Arthur’s voice boomed from the speakers, cutting through Chloe's panic like a razor. "And as for the black access card currently lying on the floor next to my daughter's foot..."
The camera zoomed slightly on my father’s cold face.
"That is an unlimited black level security key to the Sovereign Sterling treasury. My daughter holds a thirty percent voting stake in every enterprise bearing my name. She could buy the Vance family’s entire real estate firm by tomorrow morning and tear it down for a parking lot."
Eleanor stumbled backward, clutching her throat. Her face had turned an unsightly shade of pale grey. "Richard... tell me this isn't true."
Richard didn't answer her. He was already pulling out his phone, his hands shaking so violently he dropped it twice onto the table. "Arthur... Mr. Sterling! Please, there has been a terrible misunderstanding! My sister and niece did not know—"
"Silence," Arthur commanded.
On the screen, my father leaned forward, resting his hands on the mahogany desk.
"Ten minutes ago, I watched the real-time security feed from Ballroom B. I saw Eleanor Vance assault my heavily pregnant daughter. I saw Chloe Vance demand a search based on false accusations. And I saw Daniel Vance surrender his wife’s dignity to appease his arrogant family."

My father paused, his eyes locked onto Daniel through the high-definition display.
"The lockdown will remain in effect. No one enters. No one leaves. Security personnel are currently sweeping the venue. And before the night is over, the Vance family will pay for every tear my daughter has shed in that room."
