Chapter 2 - The Sinking FoundationThe sleek black SUVs didn’t just park; they occupied the perimeter of the courtyard like an invading battalion. Within seconds of coming to a halt, the doors flew open, and dark-clad operatives fanned out across the grounds, securing every exit, neutralizing the estate's private security team without firing a single shot, and sealing the Carter mansion off from the outside world.

Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere shifted from uncomfortable high-society tension to sheer, unadulterated terror. Several guests dropped their champagne glasses, the crystal shattering against the marble floor with sharp, frantic pops.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Robert Carter bellowed, stepping forward, his face flushed with righteous indignation as he puffed out his chest. As the patriarch of a billion-dollar development empire, Robert was used to bending municipal governments and local law enforcement to his will with a wave of his checkbook. He looked toward the front entrance, expecting a local police captain he had bought off years ago. "Ethan, call your head of security! Some lunatic is trespassing on private property!"
Ethan swallowed hard, trying to regain his composure as he grabbed his phone with a shaking hand. He tapped furiously at the screen, but his face paled instantly. "Service... there’s no cell service. The signal is jammed."
"Jammed?" Patricia gasped, clutching her diamond necklace. "By whom? This is an outrage! I’ll have whoever is out there arrested before the hour is out!"
I didn't answer them. I simply stood by the mahogany table, my phone resting in my palm, watching the heavy oak double doors of the grand foyer.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The sound of heavy leather boots marching up the stone steps outside echoed through the cavernous foyer. It wasn't the hurried step of panicked intruders or the casual stroll of law enforcement; it was the rhythmic, unhurried advance of men who knew the world belonged to them.
The heavy oak doors didn't just open—they were pushed wide by two men in tactical gear who immediately stepped aside, standing at rigid attention.
Stepping into the foyer and walking toward the ballroom was my brother Michael.
He wasn't wearing tactical armor. He wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit that easily cost more than most cars, his dark hair neatly combed, his silver-flecked eyes scanning the room with the clinical detachment of an apex predator. Behind him walked Daniel, broad-shouldered and imposing, rolling up his sleeves as if preparing to tear down a building with his bare hands. To their left came James, adjusting his cuffs with a razor-sharp smile that promised absolute legal ruin, followed by Ryan, carrying a sleek metal briefcase containing every financial audit the Carter empire tried to hide, and finally Nathan, whose calm, observant gaze took in every terrified face in the room.
My five brothers. The men who had raised me, protected me, and sworn an oath that anyone who ever made me shed a tear would live to regret the day they were born.
"Emily," Michael said, his voice cutting through the suffocating silence of the room as his eyes locked onto mine.
Then his gaze dropped.
He saw the torn silk of my dress. He saw the dried blood staining the fabric across my back. He saw the angry, swollen welts visible through the ripped material.
The air in the ballroom seemed to drop twenty degrees. The casual, polite demeanor vanished from my brothers' faces in a fraction of a second, replaced by a dark, terrifying fury that made even the hardened corporate executives in the room recoil in horror.
"Who did this?" Michael asked. It wasn't a question; it was a death sentence.
Before I could speak, Robert Carter puffed out his chest, stepping forward to assert his perceived dominance. He didn't know who they were. He saw five well-dressed men crashing his party and assumed they were business rivals or angry contractors.
"Listen to me, whoever you are," Robert barked, pointing an accusing finger at Michael's chest. "You are trespassing on Carter property! I am Robert Carter, and I will personally ensure—"
Crack.
Daniel didn't shout. He didn't argue. He simply closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, grabbed Robert by the lapels of his expensive tuxedo, and slammed him against the marble fireplace mantel with enough force to rattle every trophy displayed upon it.
"Dad!" Ethan screamed, lunging forward.
Before Ethan could take two steps, James stepped into his path, blocking him with a calm, chilling smile. "I wouldn't do that, Mr. Carter. My brother Daniel is having a bad night. And trust me, you don't want to see what happens when he has a good one."
"Get your hands off my father!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria as she clutched Ethan’s arm. "Do you know who we are? We run this city! My father is a federal judge!"
Nathan chuckled softly from the doorway, pulling a small leather notebook from his pocket. "Judge Arthur Blake. District seven. Currently taking undisclosed campaign donations from Carter Construction shell companies in the Cayman Islands. Thanks for the confirmation, Miss Blake. Ryan already flagged the wire transfers, but your enthusiasm is appreciated."
Color drained completely from Vanessa’s face. She stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of her silver dress and collapsing onto the floor near the champagne tower.
Robert gasped for air as Daniel loosened his grip just enough to let him slide down against the stone hearth. "You... you can't do this! This is kidnapping! Assault!"
Michael ignored Robert entirely. He walked past the terrified guests, his gaze fixed solely on me. He stopped two feet away, his chest heaving slightly as he looked at the brutal evidence of Ethan’s handiwork on my back.
"Emily," Michael repeated, his voice dangerously soft. "Tell me which one."

I lifted my chin and pointed a steady finger directly at my husband.
"Him," I said. "Ethan did it."
