Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe silence that settled over the grand ballroom was heavy, broken only by Ethan’s ragged breathing and Vanessa’s muffled sobs from the corner of the room.

Ryan remained stationed at his laptop, tapping away with rhythmic precision as financial data cascaded down his screen in glowing green characters. "Asset seizure complete," Ryan announced casually. "Every offshore account the Carters maintained in the Caymans, Panama, and Switzerland has been successfully frozen and red-flagged by international banking regulators. Their personal credit cards have just been declined globally. As of right now, Ethan and his parents don't even have enough liquid cash to buy a cup of coffee."
Robert Carter clutched his chest, sinking heavily back against the stone fireplace. The fierce, untouchable patriarch of Chicago real estate now looked like a shriveled, terrified old man. "You... you can't do this," he wheezed, looking up at Michael with watery eyes. "We have connections. We know senators! We know governors!"
"Governors who are currently scrambling to delete your phone numbers from their call logs," Nathan remarked, flipping his notebook shut with a sharp snap. "I already forwarded the dossier on your municipal kickbacks to three independent investigative journalists. By sunrise, your name won't just be associated with bankruptcy—it'll be a punchline in federal penitentiaries."
Ethan slowly pushed himself up from the wreckage of the dining table, blood smearing across his chin from a split lip. His eyes were wide, filled with a frantic, desperate disbelief as he looked at me.
"Emily..." he whispered, his voice trembling as he crawled a few inches across the shattered glass. "Em, please. You know... you know how much I loved you. It was a mistake! Vanessa meant nothing! We can fix this—"
I looked down at the man who had ordered me tied to a pillar and whipped thirty times just hours ago. The man who had looked at me with absolute contempt, expecting me to break.
"You thought my silence was weakness, Ethan," I said quietly, stepping closer, looking down into his desperate eyes. "You thought because I didn't come from money, because I didn't have a dynasty behind me, that I had no one to protect me. You forgot the most important rule of survival: the quietest members of a family are usually the ones holding the leash."
Ethan reached out a bloodied hand, trying to grab the hem of my coat. "Please... don't do this. Take everything. Take the house, the cars, the accounts! Just don't let them send me away."
Before his fingers could touch my shoes, Daniel grabbed him by the collar of his ruined tuxedo and hoisted him effortlessly to his feet, tossing him across the room like a ragdoll. Ethan slammed against the wall and slid down into a pathetic heap near the champagne tower.
"Don't touch her," Daniel growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed violence.
James stepped forward, snapping his briefcase shut with a definitive click. "The local precinct is already handling the transfer. My firm filed the emergency protective orders and criminal complaints twenty minutes ago. By the time the sun comes up, Ethan will be sitting in a maximum-security holding cell awaiting arraignment, and Robert will be answering a grand jury subpoena."
Vanessa wailed from the corner, realizing she had hitched her wagon to a burning cart. "Ethan! Do something! Your family is supposed to be untouchable!"
Ethan didn't answer her. He just stared at the floor, the full, crushing weight of his arrogance finally collapsing around him.
Michael turned to me, his expression softening instantly as he walked over and placed a warm, protective hand on my uninjured shoulder. "Are you alright, Em?"
May you like
I looked at my brothers—the men who had flown across the country at a single word, ready to tear an empire apart to avenge a single tear. The burn on my back still ached, but for the first time in four years, I felt entirely weightless.
"I'm more than alright," I whispered, pulling my coat tighter around myself. "I'm free."
