Chapter 3 - The Disassembly of an EmpireEthan tried to maintain his arrogant facade, but the tremor in his hands betrayed him. He took a step back, casting a frantic glance around the room at the fifty guests who had suddenly plastered themselves against the walls, desperate to dissociate from the collapsing Carter dynasty.

"Now wait a minute," Ethan stammered, forcing a nervous, dismissive laugh. "This is a private marital dispute! Emily is my wife! In this state, a husband has a right to—"

"A husband has a right to what?" James interrupted, stepping forward with a stack of legal documents he had casually pulled from his briefcase. He flipped open a leather-bound folder and began reading aloud with terrifying clarity. "Battery. Aggravated assault. False imprisonment. Violation of civil rights. Domestic torture resulting in bodily harm. Under Illinois law, Mr. Carter, those charges carry a cumulative sentence of roughly twenty-five to forty years without the possibility of parole."

"You can't arrest me! You're not police!" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking.

"We're not police," Ryan chimed in, stepping up beside James and clicking open his metal briefcase to reveal a glowing laptop screen connected to a satellite uplink. "The police take months to build a case. We take minutes. In fact, while we were driving up the private lane, I took the liberty of routing all of Carter Construction’s primary corporate accounts through a federal flag review."

Ryan tapped a single key on his keyboard.

Across the room, Ethan’s cell phone buzzed violently. Then Robert’s phone buzzed. Then the phones of half a dozen senior board members standing near the bar began chiming in unison.

Ethan pulled his phone from his pocket with trembling fingers, stared at the screen, and went completely gray.

"All corporate lines of credit frozen," Ryan recited casually, checking his watch. "Securities fraud investigations initiated across three federal districts. Every municipal contract you won through bribery in the last five years has been flagged for immediate judicial review. As of ninety seconds ago, Ethan, your family's multi-billion-dollar empire is officially worth less than the paper napkins on this dining table."

Patricia let out a shrill scream and fainted backward into the arms of a terrified caterer.

"You ruined us!" Robert roared, scrambling to his feet and lunging at Ethan, blaming his son for the sudden, catastrophic annihilation of their life's work. "You arrogant fool! Who are these people?!"

"They are my family," I said, stepping forward out of the shadows.

For four years, the Carters had treated me like a ghost. They had mocked my silence, dismissed my background, and treated me like a disposable accessory to their social standing. Now, looking at the cowering, broken remnants of their dynasty, I felt no pity. Only a cold, cleansing satisfaction.

Michael turned his attention back to Ethan. Without raising his voice, without making a dramatic gesture, he closed the distance between them with terrifying speed.

Before Ethan could blink, Michael’s fist connected squarely with Ethan’s jaw with the force of a hydraulic press.

Ethan spun around from the impact, crashing hard against the long mahogany dining table, sending crystal glassware, silver platters, and remaining bottles of champagne flying in all directions. He groaned, clutching his bleeding mouth as he collapsed onto the broken glass.

"That," Michael said smoothly, shaking out his knuckles, "is for laying a hand on my sister."

Daniel stepped over Ethan’s writhing body, looking down with absolute contempt. "And this is for making her apologize while you paraded your mistress in her home."

Vanessa screamed, crawling across the floor toward the exit, but two of Michael’s tactical operatives stepped into the doorway, blocking her path with rifles held at port arms. She froze, sobbing hysterically as her expensive silver dress soaked in spilled wine and broken glass.

James walked over to the cowering crowd of high-society guests, flashing a charming, razor-sharp smile. "Ladies and gentlemen, the party is officially concluded. If any of you attempt to leave before my associates take your official statements regarding tonight’s events, I will personally ensure your corporate portfolios are subjected to the same forensic audit as the Carters. Have a wonderful evening."

Like a flock of panicked birds, the fifty guests scrambled for the doors, tripping over their designer gowns and tuxedos as they fled the sinking ship of the Carter household.

Within three minutes, the ballroom was empty of everyone except the Carters, Vanessa, and my brothers.
