Chapter 3 - The Tightening NetBy three o'clock that afternoon, the illusion of normal life inside the mansion began to decay from the inside out.

Ricardo stood in his second-floor office, slamming his fist against his mahogany desk. His laptop screen flashed red with error messages.

"What do you mean the transaction was rejected?!" Ricardo roared into his encrypted satellite phone. "I am the primary signatory on the Panama holdings! I signed the transfer papers two weeks ago!"

On the other end of the line, Hector Vance, the crooked family attorney, sounded frantic. "Ricardo, something is wrong! The bank's central compliance office in Zurich just froze all twelve shell accounts! They said a master biometric override was activated three hours ago!"

"Biometric override?" Ricardo’s heart slammed against his ribs. "Only one person has the biometric key for the vault accounts..."

"Alejandro," Vance squeaked nervously. "He knows, Ricardo! He must know!"

"Shut up!" Ricardo yelled, sweat pouring down his forehead. "He doesn't know anything! He’s been downstairs all day reading reports! Listen to me, Vance—get the Valenti enforcers on the line. Tell them we need to execute the transfer immediately. If Alejandro tries to step into the bank systems, we’ll have the Valentis move their men into the perimeter!"

Ricardo slammed the phone down, his breathing rapid and shallow. He rushed to his wall safe, punched in the combination, and pulled out two loaded handguns, shoving them into his jacket pockets.

Meanwhile, three miles away from the mansion, a dark armored SUV pulled up behind a secluded warehouse near the city harbor.

Mateo opened the rear door. Alejandro stepped out onto the damp asphalt, followed by four tactical guards.

Inside the warehouse, tied to two heavy steel chairs beneath a single flickering lightbulb, were Hector Vance’s senior paralegal and the lead mercenary Victoria had hired to guard Elena during her months of torture. Both men were battered, bloody, and hyperventilating with fear.

Alejandro walked into the pool of light, his dark coat sweeping behind him like the cloak of an executioner.

"Mr... Mr. Alejandro!" the paralegal screamed, his knees shaking uncontrollably against the metal chair. "Please! I was just following orders! Doña Victoria threatened to destroy my license if I didn't notarize the forged signatures!"

Alejandro didn't look at the lawyer. His eyes settled on the mercenary—a large, scarred man named Bruno who had once worked for rival cartels in South America.

"Bruno," Alejandro said softly, pulling off his leather gloves finger by finger. "Mateo tells me you were the one who held my wife down while my brother struck her."

Bruno spat blood onto the concrete floor, trying to put on a brave face. "She was defiant, Boss. Your mother told us to teach her respect. A job is a job."

Alejandro stepped closer. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't show anger. He simply leaned down until his eyes were inches away from Bruno's face.

"You touched the Queen of this empire," Alejandro whispered. "There is no price in this world, no amount of gold, that can buy your soul back from what I am going to do to you."

Alejandro turned to Mateo. "The paralegal gives us every legal confession, every audio recording, and every bank account number connected to my mother and brother. When he is done signing, deliver him to the federal prosecutor's door with a bow around his neck."

"And Bruno, Boss?" Mateo asked.

Alejandro stepped out of the light, heading back toward the exit. "Leave him to the dogs in the cellar. Make sure he stays alive until midnight. I want my brother to hear his screams over the radio."

Twenty minutes later, Alejandro arrived at a private, high-security coastal villa twenty miles down the shore from the main estate.

This was his true sanctuary—a fortress built into the cliffs, accessible only by sea or helicopter, guarded by eighty loyal soldiers who answered only to him.

Inside the ocean-view master suite, Elena sat wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, watching the waves crash against the rocks below. The color was slowly returning to her cheeks, though the trauma in her eyes remained deep and wounded.

The door opened, and Alejandro stepped inside. The harsh, terrifying monster who had just ordered a man's agonizing destruction vanished the instant his eyes met hers.

He walked over, kneeling beside her armchair. He placed his large, warm hand gently over hers.

"They cannot reach you here, Elena," Alejandro said softly. "This place is invisible to them. My best men are stationed at every corner."

Elena looked down at his face—the powerful jaw, the dark eyes that looked at her with an intensity that melted the ice around her heart.

"Alejandro," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Your mother... she told me you would hate me for giving up the empire. She said a real mafia king would execute a wife who signed away his legacy."

Alejandro took her face in both of his hands, his thumbs gently wiping away a tear that had escaped her lashes.

"The empire is just brick, mortar, and paper, Elena," he said, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I built it with blood, and I can burn it to the ground tomorrow without shedding a single tear. You are my legacy. You are my home. The moment they laid a finger on you, they didn't steal my money—they signed their own execution warrants."

May you like

Elena let out a shaky sob and finally leaned forward, resting her forehead against his chest. Alejandro wrapped his arms around her with agonizing care, avoiding her bruised ribs, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in existence.

"Rest now, my love," Alejandro whispered into her hair. "Tonight, the king returns to his throne. And tomorrow, you will watch them fall."
