Chapter 4 - The Midnight TrialBy ten o'clock that evening, a thick, eerie fog had rolled in off the ocean, blanketing the main estate in ghostlike gray shadows.

Inside the grand ballroom, where Doña Victoria had once held extravagant galas for the city's corrupt elite, the crystal chandeliers burned with cold, bright light.

Victoria sat on a velvet sofa, clutching her pearl necklace nervously. Across the room, Ricardo paced back and forth, a glass of whiskey sloshing in his hand.

"Why aren't the guards answering their radios?" Ricardo snarled, checking his watch for the tenth time in five minutes. "Where is the perimeter patrol?"

"Calm down, Ricardo," Victoria said, though her own voice lacked conviction. "Alejandro is probably at the docks inspecting the shipping crates. He has no idea what we've planned with the Valenti family."

Suddenly, the heavy iron-reinforced doors of the ballroom swung open.

The sound echoed through the high-arched ceiling like a thunderclap.

Ricardo drew his handgun, spinning toward the door. "Who's there?!"

Alejandro walked into the room.

He was not alone. Behind him walked twelve men dressed in formal black suits—the senior Caporegimes of the family's High Council. These were the old-school bosses, the men who controlled the city's territories, the men who had sworn sacred oaths of loyalty to Alejandro’s late father and to Alejandro himself.

Behind the Capos came Mateo, dragging a battered, bloody man by his collar. Mateo threw him onto the marble floor at Ricardo’s feet.

It was Hector Vance, the family attorney.

"Vance!" Ricardo gasped, dropping his glass. The whiskey spilled across the white marble like dark blood.

Doña Victoria stood up from the sofa, her face turning pale. "Alejandro! What is the meaning of this barbaric display in my home?!"

Alejandro walked to the center of the room, stopping directly beneath the main chandelier. He did not look angry. His face was a mask of terrifying, absolute authority.

"This is no longer your home, Victoria," Alejandro said, his voice carrying an icy weight that made the senior Capos bow their heads in respect. "This is a courtroom of the Syndicate."

"How dare you call me by my first name!" Victoria shrieked, stepping forward. "I am your mother! I am the matriarch of this family!"

"A matriarch protects her house," Alejandro said coldly. "A viper poisons it."

Alejandro signaled to Mateo. Mateo pulled a high-definition tablet from his jacket and hit play. A large projection screen lowered from the ceiling wall, displaying video footage captured six weeks ago.

On the screen, the entire High Council watched in horrified silence.

The video showed Ricardo slapping Elena across the face inside her bedroom while Victoria stood in the background, laughing lightly as she selected rings from Elena's jewelry box. The audio was crystal clear—Victoria’s voice echoing through the speakers: "Sign the deed, you little street rat, or Ricardo will make sure Alejandro finds your body in a ditch when he comes back."

Gasps of outrage erupted from the senior Capos.

Old Capo Bernardo, a grizzled veteran who had served the family for forty years, stepped forward, his eyes burning with disgust. "Treason," Bernardo spat, looking at Victoria and Ricardo. "To torture the Don's wife while he fights our war overseas... this is the highest disgrace!"

"It's a lie! The video is forged!" Ricardo yelled, backing toward the rear exit, his gun raised. "I am the head of the financial sector! You can't touch me! The Valenti family is outside right now with fifty armed men! If you lay a hand on me, they will tear this estate apart!"

Alejandro didn't even blink at the sight of his brother's gun. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted walkie-talkie.

He pressed the side button. "Report."

A static voice came through the speaker: "Boss, this is Alpha Team. The Valenti convoy was intercepted three miles out. Don Valenti and his top lieutenants have been captured. The rest of their men fled. The perimeter is entirely under your control."

Ricardo's hand began to shake violently. The gun wavered in his grip. "No... no, that's impossible... Valenti promised..."

"Valenti is a dog who sold you a dream because he wanted my territory," Alejandro said softly, stepping forward. "Did you really think you could outsmart me, Ricardo? Did you really think six months overseas made me blind to the roaches crawling in my own kitchen?"

Victoria collapsed back onto the sofa, her diamonds suddenly feeling like lead weights around her neck. "Alejandro... please..." she whimpered, her arrogant facade shattering into sheer terror. "I am your mother... I carried you..."

Alejandro stopped three feet away from his brother. He looked into Ricardo's terrified eyes—the eyes of a boy who had tried to play a king's game without a king's heart.

"Drop the gun, Ricardo," Alejandro commanded softly.

"Get back!" Ricardo screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Get back or I swear to God I'll shoot you!"

Alejandro didn't step back. He stepped forward, putting his chest directly against the barrel of Ricardo's gun.

"Shoot me then," Alejandro whispered, his eyes dark, vast, and endless. "Shoot the brother who built everything you are wearing. Shoot the man whose empire you tried to steal. Shoot me, Ricardo. Show these men you have the stomach for blood."

Ricardo whimpered. Tears of panic streamed down his face. His finger trembled against the trigger, but he couldn't pull it. He didn't have the stomach. He didn't have the soul.

Alejandro reached out with lightning speed, grabbed the barrel of the gun, twisted it out of Ricardo's hand with a sickening snap of finger joints, and slammed his heavy fist directly into Ricardo's jaw.

Ricardo hit the marble floor hard, groaning in pain, clutching his broken hand.

Alejandro handed the gun to Mateo without looking back.

"The trial is concluded," Alejandro announced to the High Council. "Pronounce the verdict."

Old Capo Bernardo stepped forward, his voice dark and unyielding. "For the crimes of high treason, forgery, collusion with enemy families, and physical abuse of the Don's bloodline... the penalty is absolute stripping of name, exile to the black site holdings, and total forfeiture of life."

Victoria let out a blood-curdling scream, throwing herself onto her knees at Alejandro's feet, grabbing the hem of his trousers. "Alejandro! Mercy! Have mercy on your own blood!"

Alejandro looked down at the woman who had given him life, feeling nothing but a vast, cold emptiness.

"You died to me the moment you touched my wife," Alejandro said quietly.

He kicked her hands away and turned his back on them forever.
