Chapter 3 - The Fortress of the Lawsons

The flight to the Lawson estate in Connecticut felt less like a helicopter ride and more like a transition into another dimension. Sitting in the plush leather cabin of the twin-engine aircraft, Rebecca watched the suburban sprawl melt away beneath blankets of rolling green hills and dense forests. Emma had finally fallen asleep against her shoulder, exhausted by the trauma of the morning, while a personal medic tended to Rebecca’s broken tooth and swollen lip with professional discretion.

When the helicopter touched down on the private limestone helipad of the Lawson manor—a sprawling, limestone-and-glass architectural masterpiece perched dramatically over a private lake—a small team of doctors, house managers, and security personnel were already waiting.

“I don’t need a hospital, Dad,” Rebecca murmured as they walked down the mobile stairs into the crisp autumn air. “Just... a dentist, maybe. And some quiet.”

“You are getting a full trauma workup, Rebecca. Your unborn child’s health is non-negotiable,” Richard said firmly, guiding her toward the grand double doors of the manor where her mother, Eleanor Lawson, stood waiting with her arms wide open.

Eleanor hadn’t changed much in the five years Rebecca had kept her distance—she remained the epitome of aristocratic grace, dressed in a cashmere sweater and tailored slacks, though her eyes were swimming with unshed tears.

“My baby girl,” Eleanor choked out, pulling Rebecca into a careful, protective embrace that avoided her swollen face. “Oh, look at what that monster did to you... I told your father years ago that boy had dead eyes, but we respected your boundaries... we let you walk away...”

“Mom, don't,” Rebecca whispered, burying her face in her mother’s shoulder as the dam finally broke. All the years of isolation, self-doubt, and suppressed fear poured out in silent tears. For five years, she had convinced herself that enduring abuse was a sign of maturity, a way to prove she could survive outside her family’s golden cage. Now, surrounded by unconditional love and overwhelming security, she realized how foolish she had been.

An hour later, resting in the expansive master guest suite overlooking the lake after being cleared by a team of specialist obstetricians who confirmed her unborn baby was healthy despite the trauma, Rebecca sat propped up against silk pillows.

Her father walked into the room, holding a thick leather-bound folder. He pulled up a chair beside the bed and set the folder across his knees.

“The legal team has been busy,” Richard said, his tone grimly satisfied. “Within forty-five minutes of our departure, federal marshals and local police served an emergency eviction notice and a protective custody injunction on Trevor at the house.”

Rebecca’s heart skipped a beat. “Already?”

“Trevor tried to call his lawyer, but his lawyer’s firm happens to be on retainer with Lawson Holdings. They dropped him before he finished dialing,” Richard replied smoothly. “Furthermore, we’ve filed for an immediate, expedited divorce on the grounds of domestic abuse, physical assault, and endangerment of minors. Full custody of Emma is requested, alongside a restraining order that will land him in a jail cell the moment he comes within five miles of you or the children.”

Rebecca touched her broken tooth with her tongue, feeling a strange, unfamiliar surge of power. For years, she had felt small, trapped, and voiceless. Now, the entire machinery of a multi-billion-dollar empire was mobilized entirely for her protection.

“What about his job?” Rebecca asked quietly.

Richard smiled, a cold, sharp expression. “His CEO called me personally twenty minutes ago, apologizing profusely, and asked if effective immediately, they could terminate Trevor for gross misconduct and financial irregularities we conveniently uncovered in his division’s audit logs. He’s officially unemployed, broke, and facing criminal charges.”

Rebecca looked out the window at the peaceful lake. The nightmare was ending, but she knew Trevor wouldn't go down quietly. He was arrogant, vindictive, and cornered. And desperate men make dangerous choices.
