Chapter 5 - The Siege of the Estate

Three weeks had passed since Rebecca had returned to the Lawson estate. Under the care of world-class physicians, her broken tooth had been seamlessly repaired with a permanent crown, the bruises on her face had faded away, and her pregnancy was progressing safely. Surrounded by the warmth of her parents and the constant, giggling presence of little Emma, Rebecca felt like she was slowly waking up from a five-year nightmare.
It was a crisp Saturday afternoon. The leaves had turned brilliant shades of amber and crimson, carpeting the lawns of the estate. Rebecca sat on the stone terrace, sipping chamomile tea while watching Emma chase a golden retriever across the manicured grass.
Her phone rested on the glass table. For the past week, it had remained blessedly silent. The temporary restraining order had kept Trevor at bay, and the initial divorce hearings were proceeding smoothly through the family courts, with Richard Lawson’s elite legal battalion ensuring zero resistance.
Yet, an unshakeable sense of unease lingered at the back of Rebecca’s mind. Men like Trevor don't surrender; they corner themselves, and that's when they become lethal.
Suddenly, the security system chime echoed softly through the manor’s intercom network.
Perimeter sensor alert: North Gate access point.
Rebecca looked up, her heart skipping a beat.
Inside the grand study, Richard Lawson frowned, glancing up from a corporate dossier he was reviewing. He picked up his secure intercom phone. “Security command, report.”
“Sir, we have an uninvited visitor at the north gate,” the head of security replied, his voice tense. “It’s Trevor Sterling. He managed to bypass the outer public road by hiking through the state forest reserve bordering our property line. He’s currently scaling the security fence.”
Rebecca stood up so fast her teacup rattled against the saucer. “He’s here?”
“Don't panic, Becky,” Richard said calmly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. He pressed a button on his desk, locking down the interior panic shutters of the ground floor. “My security detail handles corporate espionage syndicates daily. A desperate, broke accountant isn't going to break into a fortified compound.”
“Dad, he’s unstable. You don't know what he’s capable of when he has nothing left to lose,” Rebecca pleaded, her breath catching in her throat as she thought of Emma playing out on the lawn.
“Marcus! Bring Emma inside immediately!” Richard barked into the house intercom.
Before Marcus could reach the lawn, however, a loud pop echoed from the direction of the lake boundary.
It wasn't a gunshot. It was a smoke canister.
Dense, gray smoke began billowing near the boathouse at the edge of the property. Sirens wailed to life across the estate, flashing amber lights cutting through the afternoon sunlight.
From the treeline near the northern perimeter, a frantic, wild-eyed figure burst into view. It was Trevor. He wasn't carrying a weapon, but his clothes were torn, his face was smeared with dirt, and in his hand, he clutched a heavy, jagged piece of iron rebar.
“Rebecca!” Trevor’s voice screamed across the lawn, echoing off the stone walls of the mansion. “Rebecca, get out here! You think you can ruin me?! You think your billionaire daddy can just throw me away like trash?!”
Emma shrieked in terror on the lawn, running blindly toward the terrace. Marcus intercepted her in a second, scooping her up and sprinting toward the reinforced side doors as security guards converged on Trevor from three different directions.
Rebecca stood frozen on the terrace, watching the man she had married—the man she had spent five years trying to fix—tear across her family’s sanctuary like a rabid animal.
Trevor dodged the first security guard, swinging the rebar wildly, his eyes locked entirely on the glass terrace doors where Rebecca stood.
“You’re coming with me!” Trevor shrieked, sprinting toward the stone steps. “We’re a family! If I go down, you’re coming down with me!”

He reached the first step of the terrace just as Richard Lawson stepped forward, planting himself firmly between his daughter and her abuser.
And then, the sound of approaching police sirens filled the air, wailing closer and closer through the private forest road.
