Chapter 4 - The Rat in a Corner

Back in Naucalpan, the suburban house felt cavernous, cold, and entirely stripped of its false domestic illusion. Trevor Sterling paced back and forth across the living room floor, his phone glued to his ear as he screamed obscenities into the receiver.

“What do you mean you won't take my case?!” Trevor roared at a local defense attorney. “I’m a homeowner! I have a corporate job!”

“Mr. Sterling,” the lawyer’s voice came back flat and exhausted. “Thirty minutes ago, my senior partner ordered me to drop all communication with you. Do you have any idea who Richard Lawson is? He owns half the county judiciary. You didn't just beat your wife—you assaulted the daughter of a man who can buy and sell this entire zip code before breakfast. My advice to you is to pack a bag and run.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Trevor threw the phone across the room, watching it shatter against the baseboard. His chest heaved with blind, incandescent rage. It wasn't guilt; it was wounded pride and bitter resentment. In his distorted mind, Rebecca was the villain. She had ruined his life, lured him in with her quiet obedience, and then weaponized her billionaire father to crush him.

“Unbelievable,” he muttered, kicking a coffee table. “A spoiled little rich girl playing victim.”

A heavy knock echoed at the front door.

Trevor froze. Hope flared briefly in his chest. Maybe she came back. Maybe she realized she can't live without me.

He rushed to the door and yanked it open, ready to unleash a torrent of emotional manipulation.

Instead of Rebecca, two towering men in dark gray suits stood on the porch. Flanking them was a local sheriff’s deputy holding a thick stack of legal documents.

“Trevor Sterling?” the deputy asked neutrally.

“Yeah? What is this?” Trevor demanded, trying to puff out his chest.

“You’ve been served with an emergency restraining order, a notice of immediate asset freeze on all joint and personal bank accounts, and an eviction order effective immediately,” the deputy recited, thrusting the papers into Trevor’s chest. “You have twenty minutes to collect your personal effects and vacate the premises. Failure to comply will result in immediate arrest.”

“This is insane! Rebecca is my wife! She can’t just throw me out!” Trevor shouted, his face turning purple.

“Mr. Sterling, your wife’s legal team obtained a signed order from Judge Harrison twenty minutes ago,” one of the men in suits said smoothly, stepping past him into the hallway like he already owned the place. “We are representatives of Lawson Holdings. We advise you to cooperate. Every square inch of this property, including your car in the driveway, has been repossessed to satisfy preliminary legal liabilities and damages.”

Trevor tried to push past them. “I live here! You can’t touch my stuff!”

The security operative didn't even flinch. He simply caught Trevor’s wrist with an iron grip, twisted it behind his back with practiced efficiency, and shoved him down the porch steps onto the concrete walkway.

“You have twenty minutes, Mr. Sterling. The clock is ticking.”

Scrambling to his feet, bruised ego and blistering anger burning in his veins, Trevor realized he was completely ruined. But as he watched the luxury security sedan idle by the curb, a dark, toxic thought formed in his mind. If he was going down, if he was going to lose everything he had built, he wasn't going to let Rebecca walk away smiling.

If he couldn't have his family, no one would.
