Chapter 3 - Descent into the BallroomWhen I stepped back out into the grand ballroom, the celebratory mood had completely died. Guests were whispering in small clusters, checking their watches, and whispering about slipping out early.

Diane was holding court near the bar, angrily defending her son to a group of uncomfortable relatives.
“It was harmless banter!” Diane hissed defensively. “Girls nowadays have zero sense of humor! She’s trying to humiliate my son on his wedding day!”
Grant was standing near the dance floor, laughing loudly with his groomsmen, holding a fresh glass of scotch. But the moment he saw me walking back toward him, his laughter cut short.
My wedding dress was still stained with blood and frosting. My hair was wild. But I wasn't walking with the hunched, frightened posture I had worn for the past year and a half. My spine was straight, my head held high, and my eyes were ice cold.
“Natalie, where the hell have you been?” Grant snapped, stepping into my path as I approached the center of the floor. “You’ve been gone twenty minutes. People are starting to talk.”
“Let them talk, Grant,” I said, my voice cutting through the ambient music.
Before he could grab my arm, Brooke stepped out from the shadows beside the DJ booth, accompanied by two uniformed local police officers and a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit—Detective Ruiz.
The ballroom music ground to an abrupt, screeching halt.
The DJ froze, his hand hovering over the mixing board.
Grant’s face drained of color as Detective Ruiz walked directly toward him, flanked by the officers.
“Grant Sterling?” Detective Ruiz asked, his voice ringing clearly across the silent hall.
Grant forced a nervous, shaky laugh, looking around at the two hundred stunned guests. “What is this? Is this a joke? Who invited cops to a wedding?”
“This isn't a joke, Mr. Sterling,” Detective Ruiz said, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket. “You are being detained for domestic assault, battery, and violation of a conditional peace bond. Furthermore, you are being served with a civil asset freeze notice pursuant to the domestic-abuse termination clause of your prenuptial agreement.”
Absolute pandemonium erupted in the ballroom.
Diane shrieked, dropping her wine glass as it shattered across the hardwood floor. “Are you out of your mind?! That’s my son! You can’t arrest him at his own wedding!”
Grant lunged forward, his face twisting in blind panic and rage. “This is insane! Natalie, tell them to get these cops out of here! Tell them you fell! TELL THEM!”
May you like
I stepped forward, holding the thick manila folder against my chest, looking him dead in the eye for the very first time without fear.
“I didn't fall, Grant,” I whispered so only he could hear. “And you’re right. We aren't keeping any secrets anymore.”
