The story hit the front pages of the local press by Monday morning: “Groom Arrested at Luxury Wedding After Assaulting Bride; Prenup Clause Triggers Million-Dollar Fallout.”
Sitting in Marcus Vance’s corner office overlooking downtown Chicago, I reviewed the financial audit reports alongside Detective Ruiz and my legal team.
“It’s even worse than we thought, Natalie,” Marcus said, sliding a thick ledger across the polished oak desk. “Not only did Clause 14 strip Grant of his corporate shares, but our forensic audit revealed he was actively funneling company funds into unauthorized offshore accounts to prepare for a hostile buyout of your personal assets.”
“Can we freeze those accounts?” I asked, sipping my black coffee.
“They were frozen by federal order thirty minutes after the arrest,” Marcus smiled grimly. “Grant’s personal bank accounts are locked, his credit cards have been declined, and his defense attorney just dropped him because retainer checks bounced due to insufficient funds.”
What about Diane? Her name was tied to several of the fraudulent property transfers we uncovered during the audit.
“She’s facing accessory charges for helping him conceal marital assets and intimidating witnesses,” Detective Ruiz added, leaning back in his chair. “She tried to liquidate her retirement fund on Sunday morning to post Grant’s bail, but our asset freeze order caught it just in time. She’s currently facing indictment right alongside her son.”
I closed the leather folder, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over me.
