Chapter 6 - The Aftermath

The silence that followed the gunfire was the loudest thing I had ever heard. Michael fell to his knees in the mud, his empire crumbling around him, his secrets laid bare before the people he had wronged.

He didn't look at me. He looked at the church—the building he had spent so much to protect, the building that had become his cage.

The aftermath was a blur of shadows and sirens. The true police—the ones who couldn't be bought—finally arrived, drawn by the chaos I had orchestrated.

I stood in the rain, my hand resting on my stomach. Emma was sitting on the grass, clutching her rosary, weeping softly. She was alive. I was alive.

Michael was taken away, not as a king, but as a prisoner. He would spend the rest of his life in a cell, unable to find me, unable to find the world he had built, unable to see the daughter he was about to have.

Months later, I sat on the porch of a small cabin in Vermont, the snow falling softly against the glass. My baby was asleep in the crib nearby, her breathing steady and peaceful.

The nightmare was over. I had kept my vow. I hadn't just swallowed the pain; I had turned it into a weapon.

I looked at the small flag on my porch, snapping in the wind, and realized that for the first time, I wasn't just Sarah. I was me. And that was the most dangerous, beautiful thing I had ever been.
