Chapter 1 - The Six ShadowsThe emergency room doors at St. Mary’s had barely hissed shut when the medical examiner’s words stopped echoing in my head. “Mr. Whitmore, she hasn't just been overworked. There is acute organ damage consistent with prolonged, controlled toxicity.”

Ruth’s voice on the telephone earlier that morning—admitting she had handed Claire her own blood pressure medication—was just a symptom of a much deeper rot. Claire hadn't collapsed by accident. Someone in my home had been poisoning her drop by drop, exactly three weeks after she started working there. Exactly three weeks... the same timeframe Rebecca had used when she first walked into my life.
I looked down at Lucas and Owen, their small hands gripping my coat. They were terrified. But they were also looking at me not as the distant, wealthy CEO who bought toys instead of time, but as their father.
"Boys," I knelt down, my voice thick with emotion, looking into their eyes. "Aunt Claire is going to be okay. But Daddy needs to find out what happened. I need you to stay with Dr. Henderson for just a few minutes."
I stood up and dialed a number I hadn’t called in five years. Marcus Vance. He wasn't just a corporate attorney; before he transitioned into high-stakes litigation for Sunridge Logic, Marcus had spent a decade dismantling corporate espionage and investigating financial predators.
"Marcus," I said when he answered on the first ring. "Drop everything. I need a forensic audit of my estate's internal communications, security logs, and household staff payroll from the last three years. And I need a background check on my fiancée, Rebecca Alcott."
"Alex, it's two in the morning," Marcus muttered.
"Rebecca told me she lost her last apartment due to a predatory landlord," I cut him off, my voice ice-cold. "Find out who lived in that apartment before her. Find out what happened to them. Find every single person who has ever been close to Rebecca Alcott and lost everything."
It took Marcus less than eighteen hours to dig up what was buried beneath layers of forged documents, quiet settlements, and non-disclosure agreements.
The report arrived via encrypted PDF while I sat in Claire’s hospital room watching her sleep.
There weren't just financial discrepancies. There were bodies—metaphorically speaking. Six men. Six successful, self-made men, just like me, who had all fallen victim to a woman who pretended to be a damsel in distress.
There was Arthur Vance, a tech founder who lost his entire patent portfolio. There was David Sterling, a real estate developer who signed over a multi-million-dollar portfolio before mysteriously filing for bankruptcy and disappearing from public life. There was Julian Cross, an architect whose company dissolved overnight after a series of engineered scandals.
Six men. Six fortunes nearly funneled into dummy corporations managed by a shell entity named Aegis Holdings.
And the sole beneficiary of Aegis Holdings?
Rebecca Alcott.

She hadn't just targeted me. She was a professional predator, a ghost who buried men without digging graves, leaving them financially and emotionally destitute while she walked away smelling like a saint.
And tomorrow, I was supposed to sign my four-million-dollar house over to her.
