Chapter 5 - Clearing the SmokeThe silence that settled over the mansion afterward wasn't heavy or suffocating anymore. It felt clean. Like a house after a long-overdue storm, windows opened wide to let the fresh air rush in.

Over the next two weeks, the fallout was swift and absolute.

Marcus dismantled Aegis Holdings piece by piece, recovering millions of dollars for Rebecca’s previous victims—including Arthur Vance, David Sterling, and Elena Bennett. I personally ensured that Elena received full restitution, medical care, and a permanent position within our foundation's legal advocacy arm.

And Claire came home.

Not as a housekeeper hiding in the background, but as a cherished guest, and eventually, as family. When she walked back through the front gates of the estate, Lucas and Owen didn't just run to hug her—they practically tackled her to the ground, shouting with joy.

I stood on the porch, watching them laugh, feeling a warmth in my chest I hadn't felt since the day I started Sunridge Logic in that hot, cramped bedroom.

That evening, I walked into the kitchen and found Claire organizing the pantry, her movements graceful and unhurried.

"You shouldn't be working," I said, leaning against the doorframe.

Claire turned, wiping her hands on a cloth, offering a small, genuine smile. "I'm not working, Alex. I'm just putting things where they belong. It's a nice change of pace from chaos."

I walked over, handing her a cup of chamomile tea. "You know, the boys asked me something today."

"What's that?"

"They asked if Aunt Claire is going to stay with us forever."

Claire’s hands paused. She looked up at me, her dark eyes searching my face, finding no secrets, no corporate stress, no hidden traps—just raw, honest truth.

"And what did you tell them?" she asked softly.

"I told them that depends entirely on whether she likes making pancakes with us every single Saturday."

A soft, radiant laugh escaped her lips—the kind of laugh that didn't carry any hidden weight or manufactured sorrow.

"Well," Claire smiled, taking the cup from my hand, her fingers brushing mine. "I happen to be an expert at pancakes. And I think I'm finally right where I belong."
