Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the MirrorThe ballroom burst into chaos as the grand chandelier lights suddenly cut out, plunging the immense gallery into pitch-black shadow. Emergency red lights flickered on, casting a blood-colored glow over screaming guests, overturning tables, and shattering crystal.

“Stay low!” Talia commanded, grabbing Dante by the lapel of his tuxedo and pulling him behind a thick marble pillar near the art gallery entrance.

Two of Dante’s bodyguards rushed toward them with drawn weapons.

Pfft! Pfft!

Two silenced shots echoed from the upper balcony level. Both bodyguards dropped to the floor instantly, single bullet holes drilled through their foreheads with terrifying precision.

“Sniper on the north balcony!” Talia barked into her comms, drawing her concealed 9mm from beneath her dress. “Dante, keep your head down!”

Through the red emergency haze, a tall figure glided down the grand staircase with unnatural speed and grace. He wore dark tactical gear, a ballistic mask covering the lower half of his face, and carried an automatic rifle equipped with a thermal sight.

On his exposed right wrist, visible beneath his tactical glove, was the cobra and shattered dagger tattoo.

Viper.

“Marcelli!” Viper’s voice echoed through the gallery—raspy, synthesized, and devoid of emotion. “Your syndicate dies tonight!”

Viper opened fire on the marble pillar, bullets chipping stone and raining sharp dust over Talia and Dante.

Dante reached into his suit jacket, drawing his own pistol, but Talia pressed him down firmly. “No! He has a thermal scope! He’s tracking your body heat through the dust!”

Talia pulled two smoke canisters from a hidden pouch beneath her gown’s train. She pulled the pins with her teeth and tossed them into the center of the gallery. Thick, white smoke billowed instantly, blinding the thermal optics.

“Move!” Talia ordered.

She grabbed Dante’s hand, leading him through the blinding smoke toward the museum’s private restoration wing. She knew the layout—she had spent three hours memorizing the floor blueprints before the gala began.

They burst through a heavy oak door into the restoration lab, surrounded by antique paintings, wooden crates, and scaffolding. Talia locked the door behind them and jammed a heavy steel wedge beneath the frame.

Dante caught his breath, looking at her with wide, adrenaline-spiked eyes. “How did you know he had thermal?”

“Because he’s not a mob hitman,” Talia said, her voice shaking slightly with repressed rage as she checked her weapon’s magazine. “He’s military. Ex-Black Vanguard.”

Dante froze. “Black Vanguard? The rogue mercenary group from Eastern Europe?”

“They weren't just mercenaries,” Talia whispered, her eyes dark with memory. “Four years ago, they betrayed an American Special Forces unit in Kosovo. They wiped out eight soldiers to steal fifty million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds.”

Dante stared at her, the pieces suddenly falling into place with terrifying clarity. “The unit that disappeared in Kosovo... that was your unit.”

Talia looked at him, her quiet waitress persona completely gone. Standing before him was Captain Talia Mercer—a cold, lethal warrior forged in the darkest corners of covert warfare.

“My real name is Talia Mercer,” she admitted quietly. “I was the commanding officer. I survived the ambush, buried my team, and spent four years hiding in New York to keep my brother safe from the men who sold us out.”

Before Dante could respond, a heavy explosion shattered the oak door.

Splinters of wood and iron blasted inward.

Viper stepped through the smoke, his rifle raised.

Talia didn't hesitate. She threw herself in front of Dante, firing three rapid shots from her 9mm.

Viper dodged with incredible speed, the bullets striking his ballistic chest plate. He dropped his rifle, drew a broad tactical combat knife, and lunged directly at Talia with a guttural roar.
