Chapter 6 - The Light on the HorizonSix months later.

Spring had arrived in Brooklyn, filling the air with the smell of ocean salt, blooming jasmine, and fresh rain.

In a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility overlooking Prospect Park, Marcus Mercer stood between two parallel bars. His legs were shaking, sweat pouring off his forehead, but he wasn't using the harness.

He took one step forward.

Then another.

And another.

Ten full yards without support.

Standing at the end of the walkway, Talia clapped her hands, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes. “Ten yards, Marc! You did it!”

Marcus collapsed onto a soft chair at the end, laughing and catching his breath. “Ten yards today, Tali. Next month, I’m running a mile.”

The medical bills had been completely cleared. Meridian Mutual had been stripped of its license following a federal investigation, Arthur and Gavin Rusk were serving seven-year prison sentences for corporate fraud, and Marcus’s full recovery was now guaranteed.

The door to the private suite opened, and Dante Marcelli walked in carrying a large bouquet of white lilies and a box of fresh pastries from Little Italy.

He wore a simple, casual grey suit—no body armor, no weapons, no shadow guards. His organization’s transition into a legal logistics giant was officially complete, and the Marcelli name was now associated with clean enterprise and major city philanthropy.

“Good morning, Marcus,” Dante said, handing the young man a pastry. “Dr. Vance tells me you’re outperforming every metric in the facility.”

“Thanks to you, Dante,” Marcus said warmly, taking a bite. “And my terrifying sister.”

Talia rolled her eyes playfully, stepping over to Dante. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close, and kissed the top of her head softly.

Over the past six months, their bond had grown into something deep, powerful, and unwavering. They were no longer boss and bodyguard, or mafia chief and former soldier. They were two people who had survived the dark and built a clean, bright world together.

“How were the morning meetings?” Talia asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.

“Boring,” Dante smiled. “Contract negotiations for the new shipping terminal in New Jersey. No snipers, no smoke grenades, no dramatic throwing of servers across dining rooms.”

“Sounds exhausting,” Talia teased.

Dante looked down into her clear, beautiful eyes, his expression turning gentle and earnest. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, heavy velvet box.

Marcus gasped from his chair, a massive grin spreading across his face.

Dante knelt down on one knee on the clean hardwood floor of the clinic.

“Talia Mercer,” Dante said, his voice thick with emotion. “Six months ago, I was a man trapped in a dangerous life, looking for someone to protect my back. Instead, I found the bravest, most extraordinary woman I have ever known. You brought light into my world, you healed your family, and you taught me what true loyalty means.”

He opened the box, revealing a stunning sapphire ring surrounded by a delicate band of platinum.

“I don't need a chief of security anymore, Talia,” Dante murmured softly. “I need a partner. My equal. My wife. Will you marry me?”

Talia looked at the ring, then at the man kneeling before her—a man who had stood by her, protected her brother, and helped her bury her darkest ghosts.

She didn't hesitate.

“Yes,” Talia whispered, tears of joy spilling over her lashes as she smiled radiantly. “Yes, Dante. A thousand times yes.”

Dante stood up, sliding the sapphire ring onto her finger before pulling her into a deep, passionate kiss that made Marcus cheer from his chair.
