Chapter 5 - The Reed Breaks the BladeThe battle inside the restoration lab was brutal, fast, and horrifyingly quiet.

Viper’s combat knife slashed through the air, cutting the emerald silk across Talia’s shoulder. Blood welled up, staining the fabric dark, but Talia didn't even wince.

She stepped inside his guard, using the fluid redirecting principles of the Hollow Reed. She caught his knife wrist with her left hand, deflected his forward force, and drove her right elbow directly into his jaw.

CRACK!

Viper stumbled back, his ballistic mask shattering to reveal his face.

Talia gasped.

The man standing before her wasn't a stranger. He was major Vance Sterling—her former second-in-command in Kosovo. The man she believed had died in the ambush four years ago.

“Sterling...” Talia whispered, her grip tightening on her gun. “It was you. You sold us out.”

Sterling wiped blood from his mouth, a bitter, twisted smile spreading across his face. “Hello, Captain. I must admit, I was surprised when I saw your face on the security footage at Bellini’s. I thought you were dead in that trench.”

“Why?” Talia screamed, her voice cracking with four years of buried grief and fury. “They were your brothers! You murdered eight of our own team for money!”

“It wasn't just money, Talia!” Sterling spat, circling her slowly like a wolf. “It was survival! The government was going to disavow us anyway! I took the fifty million and built Black Vanguard into the most powerful shadow network in the world! And Marcelli—” he pointed his knife toward Dante, who was holding a gun cover from behind a crate, “—Marcelli’s legal restructuring was going to expose our laundering routes in New York!”

“You’re a traitor,” Talia said, her voice dropping into a register colder than death itself.

“I’m a survivor!” Sterling roared, lunging forward with a deadly reverse knife strike aimed at her throat.

Talia didn't dodge this time.

She let the tip of the blade graze her collarbone, using the tiny fraction of a second to trap his arm against her body. She reached up with both hands, grabbed Sterling’s helmet, and violently twisted his neck counter-clockwise while driving her knee into his solar plexus.

SNAP!

The sound echoed sharply through the room.

Sterling’s eyes went wide with shock. The knife slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the concrete floor. He collapsed onto his knees, gasping for air as his nervous system failed.

Talia stood over him, her chest heaving, the 9mm pistol aimed directly between his eyes.

“Captain...” Sterling wheezed, blood spilling from his lips. “Do it... finish it...”

Talia’s finger rested on the trigger. Four years of anger, nightmare, grief, and exhaustion pressed down on her hand. One squeeze, and the man who had ruined her life would be gone forever.

Behind her, Dante stepped out from the shadows. He didn't try to stop her. He just stood there, watching her quietly.

“Talia,” Dante said softly. “If you shoot him now, you’re doing it for the girl who was hiding in the dark. But you aren't that girl anymore.”

Talia stared into Sterling’s dying eyes.

She looked at her own trembling hands—the hands that had carried trays, healed her brother, and protected innocent people.

Slowly, deliberately, Talia lowered the gun.

“I’m not like you, Vance,” Talia whispered. “You don't get a quick death.”

She kicked his dropped weapon away as heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway.

A dozen federal agents and NYPD officers, alerted by Dante’s high-level contacts, burst into the room with rifles raised.

“Federal Agents! Don't move!”

Talia raised her hands calmly, letting her gun fall to the floor. She pointed toward Sterling.

“His name is Vance Sterling,” Talia said clearly. “He’s the leader of Black Vanguard. On his encrypted drive, you’ll find four years of international treason, corporate bribery, and the financial records of Meridian Mutual Insurance.”

As the agents rushed forward to secure Sterling and process the scene, Dante walked up to Talia, pulling off his navy suit jacket and gently draping it over her bleeding shoulders.

“You saved my life,” Dante said, his voice filled with an intense, unyielding warmth.

“I did my job,” Talia replied, offering a tired, faint smile.

“No,” Dante said, reaching out to gently brush a strand of dark hair from her face. “You did much more than that, Captain Mercer. Now let me do mine.”
