Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of the Lion

The iron gates of the Vance estate on the north shore of Lake Michigan swung shut with a heavy mechanical groan.
Elena sat in the leather interior of Dante’s armored sedan, staring out at the stone fortress looming against the midnight sky. Snow had begun to fall in quiet, heavy flakes, coating the pine trees surrounding the compound.
Dante opened the car door himself, extending a gloved hand to guide her out. Elena ignored his hand, stepping out onto the cobblestone driveway on her own, her satin evening gown trailing over the thin layer of ice.
"You have pride," Dante observed, walking beside her as the massive oak doors of the manor swung open. "That will serve you well here."
Inside, the estate was a masterpiece of dark wood, roaring stone fireplaces, and high-walled libraries stacked with ancient books. It felt less like a mobster’s compound and more like the sanctuary of an ancient king.
Dante led her into his primary study. He poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal glass and held it out to her. Elena took it, setting it down on his massive mahogany desk without drinking.
"Let's skip the theatricals, Mr. Vance," Elena said, folding her arms over her chest to hide the faint trembling of her fingers. "You brought me here because of the port titles. I am an archivist. I know municipal property law better than any lawyer my father retains. What did Garrick do?"
Dante leaned back against his desk, crossing his powerful arms over his chest, studying her with genuine curiosity. Most women brought to his compound under syndicate claim wept or panicked. Elena was already analyzing the paperwork.
He tossed the leather folder onto the desk in front of her. "Look for yourself."
Elena opened the file. Her professional instincts took over immediately, pushing down the terror that had been simmering in her stomach since the hotel ballroom. She flipped through the land deeds, tax stamps, and corporate filings. Within forty-five seconds, her eyes caught the anomaly.
"This isn't my signature," Elena said softly, her breath catching. She pulled the document closer to the desk lamp. "The tilt on the 'V' in Voss is angled at twelve degrees. I write with an eight-degree slant. Garrick forged my signature four years ago, when I was still in graduate school."
Dante leaned forward, his eyes darkening. "He forged your authorization to turn the port trust into a money-laundering shell."
"He didn't just use me as collateral," Elena whispered, the bitter truth settling over her like ash. "He set me up to take the criminal fall if the federal government or your syndicate ever audited these books. If these leases defaulted, I was the one who would go to prison—not Garrick."
Dante walked around the desk until he stood directly in front of her. He reached down, his fingers gently lifting her chin until she was forced to look at him.
"No one is sending you to prison, Elena," Dante murmured, his voice laced with an intense, protective warmth that startled her. "Your father thought he was giving me a sacrificial pawn to buy himself time. He doesn't realize he just gave me the woman who can destroy him."

Elena looked into his eyes, feeling the shift in the room. She was no longer just a hostage; she was the key to a war. "And what do you expect from me, Don Vance?"
"Call me Dante," he commanded softly, his thumb stroking her bottom lip. "And I expect you to help me burn his empire to the ground."
