Chapter 5 - Fire and Freedom

The private conference hall of the Halston Grand Hotel was filled with fifty of Chicago’s most powerful politicians, judges, and syndicate bosses.
Garrick Voss stood at the podium, flanked by Arthur Hale and Preston. Garrick was wiping his brow with a silk handkerchief, projecting an air of deep, grief-stricken fatherhood.
"Dante Vance took my youngest daughter by force from her sister's wedding!" Garrick proclaimed loudly to the assembled council. "He is an out-of-control thug who belongs behind bars! I ask this council to revoke all Vance corporate port authorizations immediately!"
BANG!
The heavy double doors of the conference hall were thrown open with such force that the brass handles embedded into the drywall.
Dante Vance walked into the room. He wore a crisp, midnight-blue tuxedo, his tall frame radiating absolute, terrifying authority. Beside him, dressed in a breathtaking burgundy velvet dress, her hair pinned back in an elegant twist, walked Elena Voss.
Behind them walked two Vance operatives carrying a digital projector and a portable speaker system.
The entire room went silent. Garrick dropped his handkerchief, his eyes bulging in terror as he stared at his daughter walking side-by-side with his greatest enemy.
"Elena!" Preston Hale shouted, stepping forward. "Get away from him! He's holding you captive!"
Elena stopped in the center of the room, looking at her former fiancé with supreme disdain. "The only people holding anyone captive in this city are you and my father, Preston."
Elena turned toward the council members. "Members of the board. I am Elena Voss. For four years, I have served as a senior archivist for the City of Chicago. My father claims Dante Vance stole municipal land titles. I am here to present the certified, unredacted records."
With a nod from Dante, Marco activated the digital projector.
The massive wall behind Garrick burst to life, displaying original, high-resolution municipal documents from 2011—showing the forged signatures, the illegal offshore transfers to Arthur Hale’s private accounts, and the physical arson reports signed by paid-off fire inspectors detailing the destruction of the Vance shipping terminal.
A roar of outrage broke out among the council members.
"This is a lie! Fake documents!" Arthur Hale screamed, his face turning purple as he reached into his coat.
Before Hale could draw a weapon, Dante was across the room like a shadow. He caught Hale by the wrist, twisting it upward until a sickening CRACK echoed through the hall. Hale shrieked in agony, dropping his pistol to the floor as Dante forced him to his knees.
Garrick tried to bolt for the side exit, but Elena stepped directly into his path, blocking the door.
Garrick stared at his daughter, his eyes wild with desperate rage. "Elena... you ruined us! I am your father! I gave you everything!"
"You sold my sister to a thief," Elena said, her voice clear, cold, and echoing across the room. "And you tried to send me to prison to cover your crimes. You were never my father, Garrick. You were just a tyrant with a title."

Two federal marshals, who had been alerted by Dante’s legal team two hours prior, stepped through the side doors, slapping heavy steel handcuffs around Garrick Voss’s and Arthur Hale’s wrists.
As her father was dragged away in chains, screaming curses at the room, Elena stood tall, her head held high, completely free of the shadows that had bound her whole life.
